20 Years of Musafir EXCLUSIVE: Sanjay Gupta reveals Sanjay Dutt had hearty laugh when Oliver Stone praised his role of Billa and left Anil Kapoor stunned; opens up on light-hearted dig at Sholay: “I didn’t mean any disrespect. I can never do that”

The stylish action film Musafir (2004) completed 20 years earlier this month. It was Sanjay Gupta’s next directorial after Kaante (2002) and hence, it generated huge excitement. The coming together of Sanjay Dutt and Anil Kapoor and the casting of Sameera Reddy and Koena Mitra added to the buzz. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Sanjay Gupta spoke about the film and a lot more.

What made you make this film after Kaante, especially when the industry probably expected you to make a grander commercial film?
I never made a film thinking, ‘Now that I have delivered a Kaante or Aatish (1994), let me do something bigger’. I make whatever comes to me organically. Moreover, dark noir was a space rarely visited that too on a grander, larger-than-life scale with great music and great actors. Also, I was just having fun while making this film.

Sanjay Dutt’s look was dashing. His sidelocks extended to his beard and it had become a rage after Salman Khan’s haircut in Tere Naam (2003). How was his look decided?
Sanju’s character was not there originally! I had worked on the screenplay when one day, Sanju dropped by my house late at night. He said that he wanted to discuss something with me. When I asked about it, he replied, ‘How are you making a movie without me?’. I told him ‘I wanted to make this film. Hence, I am making it’. He said, ‘You make whatever film you want’. When I pointed out that Anil Kapoor is the hero, he stated, ‘I don’t care. I’ll do anything but I have to be there in the film’. He left, leaving me with a huge responsibility. I informed my writers that we need to add a character though he won’t have much screen time. But I instructed them to have as much fun as possible with it, be it with looks, songs and dialogues. I also said that every scene of his should be like an introduction, whether he comes with a knife, hoodie, bike, etc.

As for styling him, I told him, ‘Sanju, I have written your character completely insanely! Now we can style him similarly’. Sanju and I both were going on a holiday to LA (Los Angeles, USA) where we shopped for trench coats, fancy pants, shoes, etc. He picked up the butterfly knife and learned how to use it. I decided to incorporate it into the film.

Was Anil Kapoor the original choice?
Yes, always. Anil and Sameera Reddy were the original choices. It was written keeping them in mind.

The IMDb trivia section mentions that Suniel Shetty left the film due to its bold, sexual content and that even Priyanka Chopra declined…
Not at all (laughs).

Musafir’s soundtrack was out of the world and has a following even today. It was composed by Vishal-Shekhar, who had composed one song in Kaante (‘Chhod Na Re’). What made you sign them to compose all the songs of Musafir?
This was the first big film of Vishal-Shekhar. Earlier, they had done a small film with Sujoy Ghosh, Jhankaar Beats (2003). The little time I spent with them, I knew that they were incredibly talented. I told them that I was making a dark noir musical. If you go back in time and look at the Hindi noir films of the 50s, like CID (1956), Chor Bazar (1954), etc., they were all musicals. The music was so important in establishing the dark characters in shadowed light. I wondered – why did we leave that tradition behind?

In Musafir, each and every song was a blockbuster, be it ‘Saaki’, ‘Door Se Pass’, ‘Zindagi Mein Kabhi Koi Aaye Na Rabba’ or ‘Ishq Kabhi Kario Na’. And the way we presented Sameera Reddy, I don’t think she was ever presented like that again. She became the breakout star after the movie. Koena Mitra arrived on the scene with a bang.

Anil Kapoor appears without a shirt in the beginning and the audience is surprised to see him without hair on his chest…
Yes. I had also asked him to work out, and put on weight. The way Anil Kapoor was styled in that film, he had never been styled before that way. He was never called ultra-fashionable and cool until Musafir.

Did you visit cinema halls to check the audience reaction?
It was a massive success and people loved it. Nobody went into the cinema hall expecting a film like that from me. After Kaante, everyone expected a gritty big-scale action drama. But this was far from it. Also, besides Sanjay Dutt, the character of Mahesh Manjrekar resonated with the audience. After Kaante, he delivered a brilliant performance yet again.

Did you get the feedback that Sanjay Dutt should have had a longer role? After all, he was too good in the film…
No, never. Sanju, in fact, often tells me that he wants to play Billa again. He asks for a film cantering on Billa. The character is iconic; you had never seen something like this before, with those clothes, 1800 cc Honda motorcycle, cigar, speaking the way he did and his dialogues. There was something about the aura of that character. Ultimately, it’s the character that you remember, not the movies. Even now, 20 years later, we still discuss about it. So you never know. We might just come back with Billa’s story.

In an important scene, Billa kills a man but he lets his young kid survive. Billa also jokes that this kid will grow up and try to kill him 20 years later. Coincidentally, 20 years have passed since Musafir was released. Would you like to take this angle for Musafir’s sequel?
(Smiles) One of my writers came up with that idea as well. He pointed out that the boy was 9 or 10 years old in Musafir. So, he’ll be 30 in today’s times and he has prepared for the last 20 years to take revenge on Billa. So, the sequel can be how Billa deals with that revenge.

However, I had reservations. This is because Billa’s character is so iconic and big that anybody who comes to take revenge will get squashed by him. It’s just a simple one-line revenge story. We need a tagdi kahani.

The first dialogue of the film is by Billa and he takes a light-hearted dig at Sholay (1975). Any idea if Ramesh Sippy saw Musafir and did he ever speak to you about it?
(Laughs) No. Ramesh ji is far too dignified. If he ever sees it, he’ll see it as a compliment because I didn’t mean any disrespect. I can never do that. They are my fathers in the industry; Sippy Films gave me a break. And it was in gest.

First, Quentin Tarantino saw Kaante and loved it though it was inspired by his film Reservoir Dogs (1992). Musafir, which was inspired by U Turn (1997), was seen by its director Oliver Stone. Did you ever get a chance to speak to Oliver about it?
No, but there was a point when he was casting for one of his films. He was in New York and so was Anil Kapoor. Kapoor saab went to meet him as he was also trying to make his career in Hollywood. He asked Oliver Stone if he had a role for an Indian in his film. He replied in the affirmative and added, ‘I saw Musafir, the movie which you guys made’. He also said, ‘It’s a really great movie’. Then he asked, ‘Who was the guy with the knife?’. Anil Kapoor told me, ‘I didn’t know what to say. I was struggling and asking me to cast me but he was interested in Sanjay Dutt aka the guy with the knife’ (laughs)!

What was Sanjay Dutt’s reaction to this episode?
He had a hearty laugh. Nevertheless, for me, it was huge and also the second time when a Hollywood filmmaker praised me. First, Tarantino said that he loved Kaante and then it was Oliver Stone.

Due to poor collections, shows of Baby John replaced with Hindi version of Marco; Industry SHOCKED as PVR Inox Pictures manages to release Varun Dhawan-starrer in just 4 out of 275 single screens in CP Berar

The much-awaited film Baby John, starring Varun Dhawan, is having a disappointing run at the box office. It opened on Wednesday, December 25 at Rs. 11.25 crores, which was below expectations. Yet, there was hope that it would hold well the next day, which was also a working day. Shockingly, the number plummeted to Rs. 5.13 crores. On Friday, the numbers should have been the same or grown. Instead, the collections went further down. At this rate, its weekend collections would be under Rs. 30 crores and it won’t get the benefit of the holiday season and clean period until Republic Day. Realizing that the footfalls are not encouraging, theatres have already started replacing the shows of the film.

Due to poor collections, shows of Baby John replaced with Hindi version of Marco; Industry SHOCKED as PVR Inox Pictures manages to release Varun Dhawan-starrer in just 4 out of 275 single screens in CP Berar

An exhibition source told Bollywood Hungama, “On Thursday, the film suffered a huge drop which made it clear for the exhibitors that it won’t even grow on Friday. As a result, cinemas across the country have reduced its showcasing. Meanwhile, the Hindi version of the Malayalam film Marco is gradually gaining traction. There’s a curiosity to see it as many are claiming that Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s ultra-violent film Animal (2023), looks like a kiddie movie, in front of Marco because of its excessive violent scenes. Hence, there’s a demand for it and Baby John’s shows are being replaced with that of Marco and also films like Pushpa 2 and Mufasa: The Lion King.”

MovieMax Wonder Mall, Thane, near Mumbai will play 5 shows of Marco in Hindi on Sunday, December 29 while Baby John will have only 3 shows. In Mumbai’s popular G7 multiplex, Baby John was initially playing in 1000-seater Gaiety and also 2 shows in Gossip. The Varun Dhawan-starrer has now been shifted to Galaxy, which has 200 seats less than Gaiety while Pushpa 2 is back again in Gaiety. Exhibition sources say that on the weekdays, Baby John’s showcasing will be further reduced.

The curious case of CP Berar

Meanwhile, PVR Inox Pictures, the distributors of Baby John, have also come under the scanner for their faulty distribution strategy. They were unable to plan the showcasing on time and faced the heat from Anil Thadani’s AA Films, the distributors of Pushpa 2, who gave them a tough fight. And now, it has come to light that in a major part of India, Baby John barely got any single-screen cinemas.

A trade source told us, “The CP Berar territory consists of the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, Southern and Eastern Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. There are 275 single screens in this circuit and shockingly, Baby John is playing in only 4 single-screen theatres! Baby John is a mass-appealing film and should have got showcasing in at least 30% of the single screens, if not more. Alas, the distributors were able to procure less than 3% of the screens. This is unprecedented.”

Pushpa 2 (Hindi) Box Office: Has a SPECTACULAR Wednesday, is the HIGHEST COLLECTING film on Christmas

It was simply a spectacular day for Pushpa 2: The Rule (Hindi) as it made the most of the Christmas holiday. The festive season has now officially kick started and what better way than to have a national holiday fall bang in the middle of the week. It takes care of the weekdays on the either sides and while Monday and Tuesday benefitted from this with double digit numbers, the after effects would be felt on Thursday as well.

Pushpa 2 (Hindi) Box Office: Has a SPECTACULAR Wednesday, is the HIGHEST COLLECTING film on Christmas

Meanwhile on Wednesday, the film managed to go past that magical Rs. 15 crores mark all over again. This could well be the first Sunday collections of most of the biggies and they won’t mind that. However, these numbers are coming on the 21st day of the film’s run and that goes on to show the kind of sensation that the Allu Arjun starrer has turned out to be at a Pan-India level. To get to Rs. 15.50 crores at the close of its three week run is just unbelievable and one really waits to see which is that next film which will actually challenge such a run.

So far, the film has collected Rs. 731.25 crores and Rs. 800 crores would now be a cakewalk for the film. There is a huge holiday season ahead and with the weekend coming over and then January 1 holiday in the middle of next week, there are so many more double digits ahead for the film. In fact, Rs. 800 crores mark could well be crossed by January 1 itself and post that the next new milestone, which would be set for the film is Rs. 850 crores.

Note: All collections as per various box office sources

Congress MLA WARNS Allu Arjun over comments on CM Revanth Reddy: “Will not let your films run in Telangana”

Ruling Congress MLA R Bhoopathi Reddy issued a stern warning to actor Allu Arjun on Tuesday, stating that the actor’s films would not be allowed to run in Telangana if he continued criticizing the state’s Chief Minister, A. Revanth Reddy. The comments come in the wake of an ongoing controversy surrounding a tragic incident during the screening of Pushpa 2.

Congress MLA WARNS Allu Arjun over comments on CM Revanth Reddy: “Will not let your films run in Telangana”

MLA Calls for Caution in Criticizing CM Revanth Reddy

R Bhoopathi Reddy, the MLA from Nizamabad (Rural), made it clear that Congress would not tolerate any criticism directed at the Telangana Chief Minister. “If you (Allu Arjun) talk about our Chief Minister, be cautious. You are from Andhra. You came here to live,” Reddy said.

Reddy further added, “What is your contribution to Telangana? We are issuing a 100 per cent warning.” He also warned Allu Arjun about the actions of some members of the Osmania University Joint Action Committee, who had allegedly taken matters into their own hands at the actor’s residence. “If you don’t mend your ways, we will not let your films run in Telangana,” Reddy threatened.

The Pushpa 2 Controversy and its Aftermath

The controversy escalated after a tragic incident on December 4, during the screening of Pushpa 2 at Sandhya Theatre in Hyderabad. A 35-year-old woman died in a stampede, and her eight-year-old son was injured. Following the incident, the police filed a case against Allu Arjun, his security team, and the theatre management based on a complaint from the woman’s family.

The incident also attracted the attention of CM Revanth Reddy, who criticized Allu Arjun for holding a roadshow and waving to the crowds during the screening, which reportedly led to the stampede. Hours later, Allu Arjun refuted the allegations, clarifying that he was not involved in a procession or roadshow and that the incident was an accident. “It was a pure accident,” he said, further asserting that he was not against any department, political leader, or government.

The Legal Situation

Following the tragic incident, the city police arrested Allu Arjun on December 13 in connection with the woman’s death, naming him as accused No 11. However, the Telangana High Court granted him a four-week interim bail on the same day, and he was released from prison on December 14.

Despite his release, the actor’s comments have continued to spark political tension, leading to R Bhoopathi Reddy’s warning. The Congress MLA also dismissed Pushpa as a film that does not benefit society, labeling it as the story of a smuggler rather than a socially responsible narrative.

Allu Arjun has not yet publicly responded to the threat from MLA R Bhoopathi Reddy.

There have been several eminently memorable Christian characters in the past in Hindi cinema. For instance, Lalita Pawar’s Mrs D’Sa in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Anari and of course Amitabh Bachchan’s Anthony in Manmohan Desai’s (Manji as he was called) Amar Akbar Anthony.

From Amitabh Bachchan in Amar Akbar Anthony to Manisha Koirala in Khamoshi: Memorable Catholic characters from Bollywood

The Big B once said about the experience, “It was a pleasant departure. The very name Amar Akbar Anthony for a film came at a time where there were more sober and domestic titles. So, it was surprise to me, particularly because Manji was starting his home production with this film and I felt he was making a grave mistake. But he was right as always. The attitude of Anthony, his lingo, style, and clothing were all Manji’s brainchild. I merely followed what he demanded. The character detailing all came from Manji and I think it came from his keen observation of the Christian community, living mostly out of Bandra. One of his most important sequences was shot in the backyard of this very unique suburb. He himself was very conversant with the language of this community. Yes, it was a language style that was alien to me, but if you have lived long enough in Mumbai, it is unlikely that you can miss it.”

Katrina Kaif got a chance to play a Catholic girl in Rajkumar Santoshi’s Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. She did her research, bought her own clothes from the pavements of Bandra, studied how the Catholic girls behaved, what clothes they wore to parties and to church. At that point of time, she had been working very hard to get rid of my accented Hindi. But for Jenny’s character both Santoshi and Katrina felt her Hindi was just fine.

Said Katrina, “I wanted to dress and talk like a typical Catholic Bandra girl. I didn’t want her to come across as stereotypical, but still typical.”

Aparna Sen’s 36 Chowringhee Lane focussed on the desolation of a Catholic single woman. The film’s fabulous authentic detailing of Jennifer Kapoor’s character, her inner and outer lives served to mirror the community’s ethos with unparalleled integrity.

One Bollywood filmmaker who has spent a very large part of his creative time in the Christian-Catholic community is Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The epic filmmaker’s first directorial venture, Khamoshi: The Musical was set in a Goan Christian family. Manisha Koirala played Annie the beautiful daughter to a deaf and mute couple Joseph (Nana Patekar) and Flavia Braganza (Seema Biswas). The attention to getting the cultural and religious details right was amazing. Again in the highly acclaimed Black and Guzaarish, Bhansali returned to the Catholic community.

Said the filmmaker, “My fascination for the Christian religion and the community go back to my childhood. We lived in a chawl. For me, my school and my teachers and the whole quiet, spacious environment of my Christian school was symbolic of a life I couldn’t live at home. My love for churches and the religion is unconditional. In Black, I actually paid homage to my Anglo-Indian teacher in school.”

Sanjay Bhansali lights candles at a church in Bandra every Wednesday. His production, My Friend Pinto (which he did not direct) again featured Catholic protagonists played by Prateik Babbar and Kalki Koechlin. Prateik as Michael Pinto paid a tribute to Saeed Mirza’s Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyon Aata Hai. At some point in the film, Prateik referred to Albert as his uncle. Mirza’s film is the uncle of all Hindi films on the Catholic community. It was a rare attempt to look at the problems faced by the community with candour and conviction.

Naseeruddin Shah’s portrayal of Albert Pinto remains an exemplary effort to play a Catholic character stripped of caricatural characteristics. Naseer was believable because he wasn’t bothered about getting the accent right.

Neither was the talented Lilette Dubey who gave a sterling performance as a hyper-strung Anglo-Indian woman Emily Lobo in Anjan Dutta’s Bow Barracks Forever. The film, based on a real life story, shows the trials and tribulations of the Anglo-Indian community living in Bow Barracks – an old dilapidated building in north Kolkata. The narrative largely scans the decaying tenement with ruthless directness. A lack of romantic yearning translated into the presence of a captivating candour.

What the saucy screenplay lacked is subtlety. The characters are as broadly bravura as they are uninhibited in their expressions. The one tenement in Anjan Dutt’s plot seems to encompass characters of every kind – from the rebellious housewife (Moon Moon Sen) to the battered wife (Neha Dubey) and from the footloose boy (Clayton Rodgers) who sneaks into Neha’s bed to the strong and dignified mother (Lilette Dubey) who continues to believe that her elder son will call her to Australia though he hasn’t spoken to her for four years. These are real people given that cinematic tweak which separates the mannequins from the flesh-and-blood types.

The other imposing performance comes from the irrepressible Victor Banerjee. It’s a joy to watch the veteran actor essay the role of a twinkle-eyed trumpet player who chuckles loudly in the face of adversity. He even asks Lilette for a little kiss just to remind you that life goes on … come what may. Bow Barracks Forever turns the marginal stereotypes into something distinctly glorious, if not grand.

Said Lilette, “As a rule in the earlier films specially, the Christian community was pretty much stereotypical. They were portrayed as goodhearted people who spoke funny Hindi, like Lalita Pawar in Anari or Prem Nath in Bobby. But the characters in films about the Anglo-Indian community have become more nuanced. Emily in Bow Barracks Forever, was a layered character with a range of emotions. I even won the best actress award at the Madrid International Film Festival for my performance.”

Filmmaker Ken Ghosh voices the malaise that afflicts portrayals of minority communities, “It used to be very caricatural. In recent times I can only think of Arjun Rampal and Shahana Goswami’s characters in Rock On!! These were done effectively and without exaggeration.”

Going by the recent track-record it is easy to see why Albert Pinto would have smiled had he seen the way Prateik Babbar playing his imaginary nephew Michael Pinto portrayed their community in Raaghav Dhar’s My Friend Pinto.

Monali Thakur abruptly ends Varanasi concert; slams organisers for mismanagement, calls them “unethical and irresponsible”

In a video shared by paparazzo Viral Bhayani on Instagram, Monali is seen addressing the audience. “I can’t explain what they have done to the stage just so they can steal money,” she said, adding, “I am disheartened that my team and I were so excited to perform here.”

Monali Calls for Accountability

Monali highlighted that despite repeated warnings about the unsafe infrastructure, the organisers failed to address the issues. “Time and again, I’ve said that I could injure my ankle here. My dancers have been telling me to calm down, but everything was a mess,” she stated. Emphasising her commitment to her fans, Monali remarked, “You come for me, right? So, you will hold me accountable for all of this.”

The singer did not shy away from directly criticising the organisers. “I hope I grow so big that I can take all the responsibility myself and never have to rely on any Tom, Dick, and Harry who are such a useless, unethical, and irresponsible, to begin with,” she said.

An Apology and a Promise to Return

Before leaving the stage, Monali sincerely apologised to the audience and promised a better show in the future. “I sincerely apologise that we have to shut down this show, but I am going to come back for sure,” she assured.

Monali’s decision to address mismanagement echoes sentiments recently voiced by singer Diljit Dosanjh. During a live performance, Diljit criticised India’s inadequate infrastructure for concerts, declaring, “Till this happens, I won’t do shows in India, that’s for sure.”

Both incidents highlight the pressing need for improved event management and infrastructure to support live performances and ensure safety and quality for artists and audiences alike.

The Indian film industry is saddened by the death of the legendary filmmaker Shyam Benegal. He passed away last evening at the age of 90. Veteran actress Neena Gupta has spoken about the filmmaker, who directed him in quite a few movies, in an interview with us.

You were very closely associated with Shyam Babu
I have been wanting to go and see him for some time now. See, I have worked with a lot of good directors over the past years. But I worked with him when I was very new. And one has learnt a lot from him. I mean, we used to joke and say that he can talk about the history of a safety pin to anything in the world, you know. Yeah, he was very erudite, very knowledgeable. I went to Rio de Janeiro with him for Trikaal.

He was a living encyclopaedia
I have learnt so much from him. Not just about filmmaking but about life, about knowledge, about everything. It is not just Trikal. Mandi hai. Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda is one of my favourite films. He had taken somebody else and that didn’t work out. The last minute, he called me. Of course, he called and I jumped to do it. But it was a very difficult film. I still don’t understand that film sometimes. But his technique in that film is most amazing. And he didn’t talk about acting. He will tell you about the gist of the film. And then he will let you interpret the character. People don’t know  about the secret project  I’ve done with Shyam Benegal.

Tell me about it
I have done a one-hour film on soya bean with him. Because they were promoting soya bean, soya bean oil and soya bean because it’s full of protein and all that. And we were again in Hyderabad in a village. We were shooting. There was a very nice song in that film also. So, people don’t know about it. But I have done a lot of little, little work with him. And then I was supposed to do a movie adaptation Georges Bizet’s classic Spanish opera Carmen with him at one time. He fell sick and that film didn’t happen. And I felt very bad. So, there are very, very nice memories, actually, I have with him.

One of the founding fathers of your career and of Indian cinema
And the most important is he always made women-oriented films. Yes. Well, not all, but a lot of it. What I have done with him has been like that. Trikal was very much woman oriented. Mandi was very much woman oriented. And then he did this amazing series on history. Discovery of India, which is an archival thing today. It is a monument. I was not in that and I went to him. I was shooting and he didn’t take me. I got very angry. So, I went to his set. I said, make me stand in the crowd. I have to do it. He was very embarrassed. He said, no, why will you stand in the crowd?

Have you forgotten Yatra?
A very, very big thing I did with him was Yatra. Oh, yes, of course. He gave me a double role. We used to have a train to ourselves. And in our bogie, we used to decorate our own bogie. Shyam Babu had his private bogie. All of us actors would wonder if he would invite us in his private bogie just to sit and drink. Yatra was entirely shot on a train while traveling. We had a train to ourselves. In that train, we travelled all over India. Okay I was not in Ankur or Nishant. But no one knows what an experience Yatra was. The experience that I went through enriched me for a whole lifetime. I’ll tell you something about Yatra.

Do tell
We went to Kochi. So, in Kochi, there is a Juice Street. And on the way back, there were shops on the Juice Street. So, I liked one huge thing made of wood. It was a very heavy, big thing. I loved it. It was not very expensive. So, I wanted to buy it. And then I said, but how will we take it? It was a heavy thing which I have in my drawing room till today. So, Shyam said, “We’ll put it in the train.” So, he bought it for me, and we put it in the train. And I have it still.

You also did Susaman
Yes, we went to Susaman in Paris to shoot. And he knew such amazing restaurants, he had amazing knowledge about food. So, he used to take us to very, very expensive, very, very highly rated laces in Paris. And I was a vegetarian. I didn’t eat anything. So, one day, during the shooting, he said, what would you like to have, Neena? So, I said, I am in France. I’ll have French fries. He laughed and laughed and laughed. He said, stupid girl. French fries is not French. So, you know, I have so many memories profound and silly of him. I remember the shooting equipment came in the last minute in Paris. We had to shoot in a rush. We stayed in a hotel in Champs Elysees and the room was so small that there was just this bed and no room in the room. So, I had to wear a saree. And we had to get ready from the hotel itself. There was no room, there was no space to put on my saree. So, I used to climb up on the bed and wear my saree.

Well, these are experiences that have made you the woman that you are
Shyam is a very important part of my life, in my career. And also not just knowledgeable and a great filmmaker. So, much fun. Shooting his films were picnics, you know. Mandi‘s message is the most amazing message I have ever come across. He put the prostitutes in the jungle. Then a city is built there. What he said in Mandi is that sex workers have their own rights, their own feelings. We should treat them as human beings, not as objects.

Has Ajay Devgn signed a film named Super Hero? Instagram post sparks speculations

One of the biggest actors of Bollywood, Ajay Devgn, ended 2024 on a rocking note with the success of Singham Again. He’s now gearing up for a significant 2025 since he’s yet again going to have multiple releases, all of which seem promising. Meanwhile, earlier in the day, Ajay’s fans got massively excited as an Instagram post gave rise to speculation that he’s all set to begin work on an exciting film.

A famous astrologer Balu Munnangi today put up a picture with Ajay Devgn. The astrologer celebrated 9 years of knowing the star and called Ajay a mentor. Both can be seen sitting and posing together. A table is placed in front of them where fans spotted what seemed like a film announcement poster.

The fans zoomed on the picture and rotated it to 180 degrees to get a clearer view. Once they did, they realized that the name of the film, as mentioned on the poster, is Super Hero. Ajay can be seen wearing a cloak and looks quite intriguing. The poster also mentions that the music of the film will be by Devi Sri Prasad of Pushpa fame. The director’s name is mentioned as well but it’s unclear.

In a recent exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, renowned singer Sonu Nigam addressed a matter that had sparked a lot of conversation earlier this month. During his performance at an event titled “Rising Rajasthan,” Sonu made a public request to politicians not to attend performances if they had to leave midway, citing the lack of respect it shows toward the artist.

EXCLUSIVE: Sonu Nigam speaks on calling out politicians on social media for leaving events midway; says, “Politicians were there as hosts, not as guests”

“I understand that everyone is busy, but the point I was making is that it wasn’t just any event; it was their own show. They were not attending someone’s wedding or any informal gathering. They were at an event that was meant for them,” Sonu explained. He emphasized that if there is an emergency, he understands that people need to come and go, but the gesture of leaving midway without a valid reason is disrespectful.

“Politicians were there as hosts, not as guests. As hosts, they should stay until the guests leave,” Sonu said, underlining his point with a traditional perspective. “If there is an emergency, I understand, but it was their show, and they should have stayed until the end. The host should remain until the last guest leaves, and in this case, the artists were the guests.”

The incident occurred during Sonu’s performance at “Rising Rajasthan,” where he noticed that several prominent figures, including the Chief Minister and other ministers, left mid-show. The departure of these officials was followed by the exit of several other delegates, which left Sonu disheartened. He later expressed his frustration on Instagram, sharing a video where he addressed the issue directly.

Filmmaker Sukumar’s Pushpa: The Rise (2021) became a surprise success in its Hindi version. Pushpa 2: The Rule, the second movie, has broken records and has become the highest grossing Hindi film. Apart from the performance of Allu Arjun, a large amount of credit for its success in Hindi goes to Shreyas Talpade, who dubbed for the Telugu star in both the films.

In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Shreyas said that it was his Hindi dubbing stint in The Lion King (2019) that was responsible for him bagging the first Pushpa movie. “They had seen my work in The Lion King, where I dubbed for Timon for the first time. I think they felt my voice would suit that character much better than anybody else.”

Shreyas revealed that he not only studied the character of Pushpa but also gave multiple options to the makers for the character’s Hindi dubbing. “When I first saw the film (first one), obviously before starting the dub, I figured that the character would need a particular kind of a voice,” he said. “That’s how we first tested it on one scene. Then when we felt this goes well with the body language, mannerisms and attitude of the character, we decided to go ahead with it.”

He added, “So, the preparation was essentially in understanding his swag, attitude, personality, body language and the graph of the character and then deciding what voice would suit him the best. I remember giving three different options in the test, where we felt like trying three options and whichever suits him the best, we go ahead with that.”

The success of Pushpa 1 laid huge expectations from Pushpa 2 at the box office. But Shreyas said that his bigger concern was the change of Allu Arjun’s character in the second film, which he worked out with his voice.

“Not only were the expectations high but even his swag, authority and confidence had changed in part two; I mean, the character’s characteristics and attributes. The first part was more about his rise, the second part was about his rule. So, his authority had to come across in the right manner. That’s why they needed more base in the voice in the second half. That’s what we attempted and I am glad that people liked it. Somewhere we succeeded in executing what we thought,” he said.

After the first Pushpa itself, the dialogue, “Jhukega nahin sala” had become a rage. The craze increased manifolds in the second movie. Shreyas said that they had no idea that this line would become so big.

“To be very honest, no one knows what the film is going to do at the box office; whether the film will make any sense to the people or whether a particular line or song will,” he said. “We have no clue. We just give it our best shot and hope for the best. I am so glad that the line worked big time. Even ‘Flower nahin fire hai’ and some other dialogues also from part one and now in part two (have worked). You really feel good when you see reels or memes being made and people mouthing those lines, not only from actors but also sportspersons, politicians, everyone.”

After dubbing for both the Pushpa movies and witnessing their enormous success, Shreyas now feels attached to the franchise and the character.

“I have seen Pushpa’s rise from part one,” he said. “I have become a part of Pushpa and Pushpa has become a part of me. So, somewhere I am more connected with that character. That’s the reason I tend to feel what Pushpa feels and just emoted in front of the mic. I think I have been fortunate. God has been kind. There are certain films where you tend to flow with the character. Pushpa definitely is one such character where the moment you sit in front of the mic, it is kind of an automatic reaction to whatever he is doing on screen.”

Shreyas said that he hasn’t had a word yet with anyone from team Pushpa after the mammoth success of the second movie.

Produced by Mythri Movie Makers and Sukumar Writings, Pushpa 2: The Rule also stars Rashmika Mandanna and Fahadh Faasil.

Rashmika Mandanna, the female lead in Pushpa 2: The Rule, has addressed the controversy surrounding the song ‘Peelings’, which faced backlash over its choreography. Speaking with Galatta Plus, the actress admitted she was initially uncomfortable performing the moves due to her fear of being lifted.

Rashmika Mandanna BREAKS SILENCES on Pushpa 2: The Rule song ‘Peelings’ choreography: “The second we saw the rehearsal video, I was like, ‘What in the world is going on?’”

“‘Peelings’ was shot a couple of days before its release. We finished shooting for that song in five days,” Rashmika revealed. Reflecting on her first reaction to the choreography, she said, “It came as a surprise because the second we saw the rehearsal video, I was like, ‘What in the world is going on?’ Majority of the time, I thought I was dancing on Allu Arjun sir.”

Rashmika Mandanna says she wasn’t comfortable before ‘Peelings’ shoot

Rashmika shared that her fear of being lifted added to the challenge of performing the song. “I wasn’t very comfortable with people lifting me, and here is the song where I am only being lifted. I had this thing of ‘how am I going to do this?’ But I recently realised that if I make up my mind, I fully go and surrender to my director and co-actor. Once you trust the man, it becomes fun,” she said.

Addressing Skepticism and Self-Doubt

When asked about skepticism regarding the song, Rashmika shared her mindset as an actor. “I don’t give myself room to doubt because it would be impossible to be an actor if I doubted myself. As an actor, I know I am here to entertain others and please my director. This is my bread and butter, and this is what I am here to do,” she explained.

She further elaborated on her approach to roles, saying, “I like to challenge myself and choose diverse roles, whether it’s Animal, Chhava, or Sikandar. People can dislike it, but not everything is everybody’s cup of tea.”

While Pushpa 2: The Rule has been a box office juggernaut, crossing the Rs 1500 crores mark, it has not been free from challenges. Legal trouble arose for the film’s lead, Allu Arjun, after a stampede during its premiere outside Sandhya Theatre tragically claimed a woman’s life.

The Anaconda series, which began in 1997, has been dormant for several years, making this reboot a significant move by Sony Pictures. By bringing together two of Hollywood’s most bankable stars, the studio appears to be positioning the film as a major holiday season release.

The film will receive an exclusive theatrical release, foregoing the increasingly common simultaneous streaming platform debut. This decision underscores Sony’s confidence in the project’s potential to draw audiences back to theaters during the competitive Christmas season of 2025.
