Pratibha Ranta on nepotism, merit and making it as an outsider: “I tend to keep my head down and work hard”

With her breakout performance in Laapataa Ladies, Pratibha Ranta has quickly established herself as one of the most promising new talents in the industry. But while the applause is still fresh and opportunities are beginning to open up, the actress remains grounded—and refreshingly candid—about the realities of being an outsider in the film industry.

In a recent interview with Cosmopolitan India, Pratibha opened up about the lingering conversations around nepotism and how it continues to shape careers in Bollywood. But rather than expressing frustration or bitterness, she offered a nuanced perspective. “But we all know that the industry isn’t always kind to outsiders,” she said.

Responding to a question about how she feels about star kids bagging movies despite flops, Pratibha replied in Hindi, “I think we’re at a strange turning point where the industry is figuring out what the audience truly wants. The stakes are higher than ever, because audiences now have a direct say – they’ll tell you exactly what they love and what they absolutely don’t. It’s no longer just about newcomers; everyone is being held accountable”.

“If a star kid is genuinely good at their job, they earn their due respect and credit. And the same goes for an outsider – I think, in this regard, things have started becoming fairer. And at the end of the day, if you put in the work, opportunities will come your way. So instead of worrying about who’s getting what, I tend to keep my head down and work hard,” she added.

Her statement reflects a growing sentiment among a new generation of actors who are navigating a post-pandemic, content-driven film landscape where social media, streaming platforms, and audience feedback hold more sway than ever before.

As for what lies ahead, Pratibha’s focus remains clear: she’s here for the craft, and she’s willing to keep putting in the work. With the acclaim of Laapataa Ladies behind her and a grounded philosophy guiding her path, it’s likely that we’ll be seeing much more of this rising star—on her own terms.
