BREAKING: Jio Studios issues public notice; declares ‘FIRST and PARAMOUNT lien’ on Ali Abbas Zafar Films LLP’s commercial earnings

In a development that has caught the attention of the trade and industry, Jio Studios (the Media and Entertainment division of Reliance Industries Limited) has issued a Public Notice cautioning the film, media and entertainment industry about its contractual rights connected to Ali Abbas Zafar Films LLP and filmmaker Ali Abbas Zafar.

BREAKING: Jio Studios issues public notice; declares 'FIRST and PARAMOUNT lien' on Ali Abbas Zafar Films LLP's commercial earnings

The notice, published on January 17, 2026, in Atul Mohan’s Complete Cinema magazine by King Stubb & Kasiva, Advocates & Attorneys, states that pursuant to binding contractual arrangements entered into between Jio Studios, Ali Abbas Zafar Films LLP and Ali Abbas Zafar, with effect from September 30, 2025, Jio Studios “holds and continues to hold a first and paramount lien” on all incomes, revenues, receipts, proceeds and earnings of whatever nature and in whatever form, whether present or future, accruing from what the notice describes as “Commercial Engagements”.

Importantly, the notice indicates that the lien is not restricted only to projects mounted with Jio Studios. It claims coverage over earnings arising from a wide range of media and entertainment activities linked to Ali Abbas Zafar Films LLP as well as Ali Abbas Zafar in his individual capacity, that is, spanning projects, ventures, engagements, productions, collaborations and exploitations, whether or not Jio Studios is involved. The notice further signals that the claim extends to projects undertaken through other entities as well, where the LLP’s designated partners or directors have a stake, including entities that exist today and those that may be incorporated later. In addition, it covers earnings of the designated partners/directors of Ali Abbas Zafar Films LLP from any source within the media and entertainment domain.

The public notice adds that the said lien is absolute, continuing, enforceable and will remain in force by operation of contract and law until full discharge of all outstanding obligations owed to Jio Studios, along with applicable interest. It also advises producers, studios, financiers, OTT platforms, broadcasters, talent agencies and other industry participants to take note of the stated lien and to deal with the concerned parties appropriately while considering or entering into such commercial arrangements. Where necessary, Jio Studios calls upon stakeholders to intimate it prior to finalizing or giving effect to any such arrangement, so that the rights of all parties, including Jio Studios, are not prejudiced.

What does “first and paramount lien” mean?

In simple terms, a lien is a security/legal right over receivables or money to secure payment of dues. The words “first and paramount” indicate top priority, meaning Jio Studios is asserting it must be paid first out of the covered earnings, ahead of other claims or subsequent security interests.

The notice ends by stating that Jio Studios reserves the right to enforce the lien and pursue remedies as available under applicable law.

Ali and Jio’s association

Ali Abbas Zafar collaborated with Jio Studios once, for Bloody Daddy (2023). The Shahid Kapoor-starrer released directly on JioCinema and was produced by Jio Studios, Ali Abbas Zafar’s AAZ Films and others. The action entertainer was directed by Ali Abbas Zafar.

Dhurandhar Box Office: Continues to be TOP PERFORMING FILM even on 7th Friday

What a run Dhurandhar has been having at the box office. Even on its 7th Friday, the film has been the top performer with no other film coming even close to its collections. It hasn’t helped that most of the films have been weak in content or not universal due to which the Aditya Dhar directorial has stayed on to be the first choice of the audience.

Dhurandhar Box Office: Continues to be TOP PERFORMING FILM even on 7th Friday

That happened yesterday as well when Rs. 2.10 crores were collected at the box office. The collections are, of course, on the lower side but then other films are not collecting even this much which further reaffirms the supremacy of the Ranveer Singh starrer. In fact, today the film will jump quite well and around Rs. 3-3.50 crores are on the cards. Then similar collections tomorrow will ensure that not just will Week 7 get into double digits but then there would be more added to it as well before Border 2 strikes next Friday.

The film is also all set to surpass Rs. 875 crores milestone as its current collections stand at Rs. 871.90 crores. By tomorrow, the film will be close to Rs. 880 crores and then Rs. 885 crores should be crossed by the close of 7th week. Post that, Rs. 15 crores would remain for an entry into the 900 Crore Club and that would be touch and go unless Republic Day holiday helps boost its collections in a big way.

All Time Mega Blockbuster

Note: All collections as per various box office sources

Celina Jaitly pens heartbreaking tribute on Army Day for brother detained in UAE: “Families serve too, just without medals”

On the occasion of Army Day on January 15, actor and former beauty queen Celina Jaitly paid a poignant tribute to her brother, Major (Retd.) Vikrant Kumar Jaitly, who has been detained in Abu Dhabi for more than 14 months, in a heartfelt social media message that resonated with many online.

Celina Jaitly pens heartbreaking tribute on Army Day for brother detained in UAE: “Families serve too, just without medals”

Taking to Instagram, Celina reflected on the unseen sacrifices made by soldiers’ families, emphasising that their service often goes unrecognised. She opened her post with an emotion-laden line: “#armyday Families serve too, just without medals.”

The actress shared a throwback image from a visit to her brother’s unit in the valley, recalling how one of his fellow officers, who was martyred after that mission, placed his para beret on her head. “He smiled & said, ‘Our families stand behind us & pay an equal price of bravery while we stand at the front,’” she wrote, underlining the emotional weight carried by those waiting at home.

Celina also posted a letter that Vikrant wrote in 2000, soon after joining the armed forces. Describing her brother as a “fourth-generation soldier” born with “ammunition boots on his feet,” she noted how he joined the Indian Army through a technical entry and went on to serve with the elite 3 Para SF, earning commendation during his career. “This letter reminds me that a soldier is forged long before the uniform, long before the medal, & long before the battlefield,” she wrote, expressing the profound pride and pain in equal measure.

The legal battle surrounding Major Jaitly’s detention continues to unfold. The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to the Central government, asking it to file a status report within four weeks and to appoint a nodal officer to facilitate communication and assistance for him, including legal and medical support. His counsel, Advocate Raghav Kacker, said such steps could “help secure his release” and strengthen ties between India and the UAE.

In her message, Celina also recalled personal memories — the family home, their parents, and the sacrifices that have shaped their family’s legacy.

The situation has drawn public attention and diplomatic interest, with India’s external affairs authorities reportedly providing all possible assistance. While specific details of the charges against Major Jaitly have not been made public, authorities cited “national security concerns” surrounding his detention, and his family has suggested possible mistaken identity or other external factors.

Veteran trade analyst Taran Adarsh has offered a candid assessment of what went wrong with War 2, despite the film boasting a star-studded cast and a high-profile creative team. Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, Adarsh said the film’s failure was not surprising, given its lack of substance.

EXCLUSIVE: Taran Adarsh says War 2’s failure was no surprise; explains why the damage went beyond financial loss

Referring to the film’s scale and expectations, Adarsh pointed out that War 2 had all the ingredients of a major blockbuster on paper. “If you watch War 2… first of all, it was a sequel of a successful film. You are making it bigger than that with stars like Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, Ayan Mukerji as the director… and what did you make? There were expectations,” he said.

However, according to Adarsh, the core issue lay in what the film ultimately offered to audiences. “But what did you give to the audience? In terms of content. There was nothing in the film. Nothing in the film. And when such films flop, there is no surprise,” he remarked.

Emphasising changing audience priorities, Adarsh said that star power alone is no longer enough to ensure success. “People want entertainment. Big screen entertainment. And you are not able to give that. You are only showing stars. That doesn’t work,” he added.

The trade expert also addressed the debate around the film’s box office numbers, noting that collections cannot be viewed in isolation. While War 2 reportedly earned around Rs 185 crores, Adarsh stressed that profitability depends heavily on costs and returns.

“Even Salman’s films can reach 100–150 crores. But the cost — that is very important. That is very, very important. If you are giving returns in front of cost, then how can the film be successful?” he asked.

According to him, the consequences of such underperformance extend beyond financial losses. “It is a loss for the producers. Absolutely. It is a financial loss. That is another thing. But your reputation, which takes a hit because of that — that becomes a problem,” Adarsh concluded.

His remarks underline a recurring industry conversation: in an era of rising budgets and heightened expectations, content and audience experience remain central to a film’s fate, regardless of scale or star cast.

Tiger Shroff and Conor McGregor to shape BKFC’s India expansion as Bare-Knuckle League launches

Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC) and Bare Knuckle Fight League (BKFL) officially announce their historic entry into India, unlocking one of the world’s largest and most passionate combat sports markets.

Tiger Shroff and Conor McGregor to shape BKFC’s India expansion as Bare-Knuckle League launches

This landmark expansion is being led by World League of Fighters (WLF) — the official license holder for BKFC — co-founded by Rajesh Banga, Sunil Mathew, and Siraj Gill, who together with David Feldman and Conor McGregor have invited Mr. Parag Sanghvi, prominent film producer, and Tiger Shroff, superstar in Indian cinema and martial artist, to join the board and help shape BKFC’s growth into a global phenomenon with India at its core. BKFC is already the fastest-growing combat sports organization in the world.

World League of Fighters (WLF) enters India with formidable global credentials, having successfully delivered the biggest and most electrifying BKFC event in the Middle East last year — a sold-out spectacle in Dubai that sent fans into a frenzy and set new benchmarks for live combat entertainment in the region.

For the first time in combat sports history, India will host a team-based bare-knuckle league format, transforming fights into a high-stakes global franchise competition — making the sport faster, fiercer, and more thrilling for fans worldwide.

The inaugural teams included Crushers, Punishers, Warriors, Phantoms, Gladiators, and Infernos.

To further strengthen the platform’s leadership, Mr. Rahul Saxena has been appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO). He is widely recognized for building and scaling multiple billion-dollar global brands, bringing unmatched commercial and operational expertise to the organization.
India — home to over 1.4 billion people, a deep-rooted martial tradition, and rapidly expanding sports viewership — now becomes a cornerstone of the global growth strategy for BKFC, BKFL, and WLF.

Rajesh Banga, Sunil Mathew, and Siraj Gill stated: “India is not just a market — it is the future of global combat sports. Together with BKFC, BKFL, and WLF, we are building an ecosystem that will develop Indian fighters, create global stars, and deliver world-class fight entertainment to millions of fans.”

Mr. Parag Sanghvi, Board Member, added: “This is where world-class storytelling meets raw, uncompromising sport. With WLF, BKFC, and Conor McGregor, we are not just launching a league — we are architecting a global sports IP from India that will command attention, talent, and fandom worldwide.”

David Feldman, Founder & President of BKFC, said: “India has been on our roadmap for a long time. The scale, the energy, the culture — there is no place like it. With the leadership team we have assembled and our partnership with WLF, we are bringing the purest form of combat sports to a nation ready for it.”

Conor McGregor, Global Partner, BKFC, said: “India has warriors in its DNA. What we’re building with BKFC and BKFL in India will be something the world has never seen before. This is not just expansion — this is a revolution.”

Tiger Shroff, Superstar of Indian Cinema and Martial Artist, said: “Honoured to stand alongside Conor McGregor as we create something truly historic for Indian sport. This is more than a fight — it’s a global movement, and history is being written. Just like cinema, sport is a celebration of talent and skill, and Parag (Sanghvi) and I are committed to turning this into a landmark moment for India.”

The first official BKFC & BKFL team-based events are scheduled for 2026, with venue and fight card announcements coming soon.

This is not just a launch. This is the birth of India’s combat sports era.

REVEALED: Land bought by Amitabh Bachchan for Rs 7 cr in 2007 near GIFT City, Gujarat now valued at WHOPPING Rs 210 cr; Abhishek to build massive project on the same land

On January 10, it emerged that Abhishek Bachchan is set to enter the real estate space with a project in GIFT City, Gandhinagar, Gujarat. He has entered into a profit-sharing agreement with producer and real estate mogul Anand Pandit for the development, which aims to create luxury residential, office and retail spaces spanning over one million sq ft of built-up area.

REVEALED: Land bought by Amitabh Bachchan for Rs 7 cr in 2007 near GIFT City, Gujarat now valued at WHOPPING Rs 210 cr; Abhishek to build massive project on the same land

Interestingly, reports also stated that the complex will come up on land purchased by Amitabh Bachchan over a decade ago, when he was Gujarat’s brand ambassador. Anand Pandit told Mid-Day that Amitabh has gifted the land to Abhishek. Meanwhile, further reports have surfaced about the land’s valuation then, and what it is estimated to be worth today.

As per an article in Bhaskar, Amitabh Bachchan bought the land parcel for Rs. 7 crores from Virambhai Rudabhai Gamara of Chandlodiya, Ahmedabad. It is located at Shahpur village, very close to GIFT City. The deal was carried out by Rajesh Rishikesh Yadav, Managing Director of ABCL, who represented Amitabh Bachchan as his power-of-attorney holder.

The report further stated that this land measures 5.72 acres. As per the current rate, the land’s value is estimated to be Rs. 210 crores. In other words, the value of the land increased by Rs. 203 crores and this is a feat considering Big B invested Rs. 7 crores for it just 15 years ago.

The Bhaskar story carried a quote of Shahpur village head H K Patel, who confessed that Amitabh Bachchan’s investment has boosted confidence in the region. He further added that the real estate prices have been going steadily upwards, leading to development in the region.

Coming back to the luxurious project, Lotus Developers will handle the project’s design, planning and construction, while the land will continue to be owned by the Bachchan family. The execution will be undertaken by Lotus Developers’ subsidiary, Rise Root Projects Pvt. Ltd., under a profit-sharing arrangement between the developer and Abhishek Bachchan.

The past weekend also saw Amitabh Bachchan visit Surat, Gujarat. Videos of the veteran actor being mobbed in the city have surfaced on social media.

Amitabh was in Surat for the opening ceremony of the Indian Street Premier League (ISPL), which is scheduled to be held from January 9 to February 6 at Lalbhai Stadium. He was also joined by Akshay Kumar, Suriya, Ram Charan, Sachin Tendulkar and others. As expected, the presence of so many film and sport stars led to excitement among the attendees.

Oscar buzz grows for Indian Cinema as Tanvi The Great and Kantara: Chapter 1 enter the 98th Academy Awards race

Indian cinema’s presence at the 98th Academy Awards is steadily gaining momentum. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has officially unveiled a list of 201 feature films eligible for consideration in the Best Picture category, confirming that these titles have fulfilled all additional eligibility requirements beyond standard submissions.

Oscar buzz grows for Indian Cinema as Tanvi The Great and Kantara: Chapter 1 enter the 98th Academy Awards race

Among the Indian films making headlines are Anupam Kher’s Tanvi The Great and Rishab Shetty’s Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1, both of which have adopted a strategic route towards international recognition by securing a place on the Academy’s eligibility list. Their inclusion signals growing global attention towards diverse Indian narratives, spanning intimate human drama and culturally rooted mythology.

This development follows another major boost for Indian cinema, with Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound earning a spot among the Top 15 shortlisted films in the International Feature Film category earlier this season. Together, these milestones suggest a promising year for Indian filmmakers at the Oscars.

In November 2025, AMPAS had announced 317 eligible films across the Best Documentary, Animated Feature, and International Feature Film categories. With anticipation now building, the official Oscar nominations are scheduled to be announced on January 22, a date keenly awaited by the global film community.

Directed by Anupam Kher, Tanvi The Great stars Shubhangi in the role of Tanvi Raina, a young girl inspired by her late father’s service in the Indian Army. The film sensitively explores themes of autism, resilience, and patriotism, as Tanvi sets out to honour her father’s legacy and dreams of following in his footsteps.

On the other end of the spectrum, Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1, produced by Hombale Films, delves deep into the ancient traditions of Daiva worship in Tulunadu, tracing its origins to the fourth-century Kadamba dynasty. Rishab Shetty plays Berme, the fierce protector of the Kantara forest and its indigenous people, in a story that blends mythology, history and cultural identity on an epic scale.

Tanvi The Great is produced by Anupam Kher Studios in association with NFDC, with global distribution handled by Excel Entertainment, led by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar, and AA Films, led by Anil Thadani.

With multiple Indian films making notable inroads into the Oscar race, this year is shaping up to be a defining moment in Indian cinema’s expanding global footprint.

Sajid Nadiadwala reveals Shahid Kapoor’s inked and bloodied avatar in O’Romeo poster; first look tomorrow

Finally, fans get their first glimpse of Shahid Kapoor as Romeo in the much-anticipated film of the year O’Romeo. Presented by the visionary Sajid Nadiadwala and directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, the film also stars Triptii Dimri. The film promises a unique cinematic experience. Shahid’s intense look in this first reveal hints at a character that is both menacing and quirky, showcasing the depth, drama, and passion that O’Romeo is ready to bring to the screen.

Sajid Nadiadwala reveals Shahid Kapoor’s inked and bloodied avatar in O’Romeo poster; first look tomorrow

The second poster of O’Romeo presents Shahid Kapoor in an unflinching, feral avatar, instantly setting a dark and violent tone for the film. Set against a deep crimson backdrop that evokes blood, rage and moral decay, the visual is deliberately unsettling. Shahid is seen mid-roar, his mouth wide open in a raw expression of fury, pain and defiance. Blood streaks his face and drips across his hands, suggesting recent violence rather than stylised action. The bruises, cuts and smeared blood feel lived-in, reinforcing the sense of a character who has been pushed to an emotional and physical edge.

Dressed in a black outfit, with tattoos visible across his neck and arms, the actor’s look leans into a hardened, almost anarchic persona. His clenched posture, tense shoulders and blood-smeared fingers positioned near his waist convey barely contained aggression, as if the character is on the brink of exploding. The lighting is harsh and shadow-heavy, amplifying the menace and stripping the frame of any softness. There is no distraction in the background — the focus remains entirely on the character’s psychological state.

Producers seek PM Narendra Modi to help lift Dhurandhar ban in six Gulf countries: “Suppression of the freedom of expression”

The Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association (IMPPA) has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene after Dhurandhar, the Ranveer Singh–starrer spy thriller, was reportedly banned in several Middle Eastern countries, describing the restrictions as “unilateral and uncalled for”. The appeal highlights concerns about freedom of expression and the economic impact of the ban on one of Indian cinema’s biggest recent hits.

Producers seek PM Narendra Modi to help lift Dhurandhar ban in six Gulf countries: “Suppression of the freedom of expression”

In a letter signed by IMPPA President Abhay Sinha, the association asked the government to take up the matter with authorities in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Saudi Arabia. “We earnestly appeal to your kind self to intervene regarding the unilateral and uncalled for ban imposed on the film Dhurandhar … the ban imposed … is a suppression of the freedom of expression of our member,” the letter reads.

The film, directed by Aditya Dhar and starring Ranveer Singh, has been certified in India by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and has emerged as a major box office success domestically, breaking records and drawing praise from audiences and critics. IMPPA emphasised that the countries where the ban has been imposed are “India friendly” and engaged in regular business and cultural exchanges with the country.

“We humbly request that the Government of India take up this matter with the concerned authorities … and make efforts to ensure that freedom of expression is respected and the ban is revoked at the earliest,” the letter added. It also noted that IMPPA had sent copies of the appeal to Union ministers, including Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

Dhurandhar has faced controversy in some quarters over its portrayal of geopolitical themes, with critics labelling aspects of the film as biased or propagandist, even as supporters within the industry defended its storytelling and craftsmanship. However, the Middle East ban is being viewed by producers and industry bodies primarily as a market access and free expression concern rather than a content dispute within India.

The ban is believed to have had a tangible economic impact. Industry sources suggest Dhurandhar missed out on significant box office revenue in the Gulf region—a traditionally strong market for Indian action films—due to its absence from cinemas there, even as it continues to perform strongly in markets where it is available.

25 Years of Mela: Aamir Khan admits he did Mela only to launch brother Faisal

Aamir Khan, who is known to be extremely picky about the films he associates with, did the much-criticised Mela which clocks twenty-five years on January 7 solely to launch his brother Faisal Khan.

25 Years of Mela: Aamir Khan admits he did Mela only to launch brother Faisal

Ironically, Faisal has since accused Aamir of multiple transgressions, including illegal confinement and career sabotage. “Kya karein?” Aamir sighs. “That is my destiny. You can fight the world, but how can you fight your own family?”

Speaking about Mela, Aamir openly admits that the film was done for his brother’s sake. A loud and boorish adaptation of Sholay, Mela featured Aamir as a comic-book version of Dharmendra, while Faisal was cast as a tight-fisted, clenched-jaw take on Amitabh Bachchan’s iconic role from Sholay.

Mela bombed at the box office. Yet, Aamir insists he has no regrets. “I was obviously disappointed by its failure to achieve its potential. Beyond that, I think it’s tough to answer your question. First of all, let me tell you, every film I do means a lot to me. The failure of Mela definitely made a difference to me. It was hard on Faisal, but it was hard on me as well. I’m not comfortable with the idea of any of my films not realising their full potential. The entire team had worked very hard. We were all disappointed.”

Vir Das reveals how Imran Khan joined Happy Patel after a surprise text message

Vir Das, who is set to make his directorial debut with Aamir Khan Productions’ upcoming film Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, recently shared an interesting anecdote about how actor Imran Khan became part of the project. The film has already generated curiosity following its trailer, and Vir’s revelation offers insight into the unexpected way the collaboration came together.

Speaking about the moment, Vir recalled receiving an unexpected message from Imran Khan, who has largely stayed away from the limelight in recent years. Vir said, “One day, I got a text from Imran. He doesn’t even use WhatsApp,” before adding, “The message said, ‘Hey, I hear the movie is shaping up nicely. Can I come and do something fun in the film?’” According to Vir, the message came as a surprise, especially given Imran’s selective approach to film projects.

Following the actor’s outreach, Vir explained that he decided to rework the script to accommodate Imran in a way that would do justice to his interest in returning to a film set. Describing the process, Vir said, “After he reached out to me, I went back and incorporated him into the script of Happy Patel. I was like, yes, definitely, but then give me some time. I’ll craft a character for you that is entertaining and wild, and we need to do something you’ve never attempted before.” Interestingly, Vir shares a good bond with Imran considering that the duo shared screen space together in Delhi Belly.

The recently released trailer of Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos highlights the film’s comic tone and quirky narrative. Packed with humorous moments, the trailer offers a glimpse into the world Vir Das has created, combining situational comedy with an energetic, light-hearted approach.

Produced by Aamir Khan Productions, Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos marks Vir Das’ first outing as a director. In addition to Vir and Imran Khan, the film features Mona Singh, Sharib Hashmi and Mithila Palkar in pivotal roles. The film is scheduled to release in theatres on January 16, 2026.
