Abhishek Banerjee talks Thamma, Bhediya 2, and his ever-growing bank balance

Your sudden appearance in Thamma brings the house down. To what do you attribute this rousing response?
I think Jana as a character is so loved because he’s the most innocent and gullible one. The audience connects with that innocence and his proactiveness in these extreme situations.

Your character Jana deserves a universe of his own, don’t you think?
I totally second that! (laughs) I’ve been telling Amar bhai (writer-producer Amar Kaushik) and Niren bhai (writer Niren Bhatt). But then, it can’t just be a creative call when it comes to putting money into a film. So let’s wait and watch. Maybe someday — fingers crossed.

When you were asked to be part of Thamma, what was your response?
The response is always positive! I’m just happy to be part of the MHCU (Maddock Horror Comedy Universe). In many ways, I’m lucky that I get to play Jana so often — it helps me build and sustain a relationship with the audience.

When do we get to see you back in the MHCU?
Very soon, hopefully. In Bhediya 2, of course — and maybe in other worlds too. It depends on when Jana is required in the universe!

Do you prefer dark or comic roles?
I don’t know if I prefer dark roles or if I just get those offers because of the evil character I played in Paatal Lok. Nevertheless, I truly enjoy them because they allow me to explore the darker side of my mind — which in turn helps me control it in real life.

Does your success reflect in your bank balance?
Coming from a lower-middle-class household, trust me — what I’ve achieved financially already feels like a dream come true for a working-class Indian family. That said, my bank balance is definitely amplifying with each project, and I’m looking forward to enjoying my money the way the top 1% of India’s affluent class does!

Parmeet Sethi jokes Kapil Sharma owes him royalty; ‘He uses my name so much…”

Parmeet Sethi, famous for his villainous turn in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, has made a humorous demand of comedian-actor Kapil Sharma asking for “royalty” because of how often his name is used on the latter’s show. According to Sethi, Kapil mentions him so frequently in the commentary that Sethi feels he has become a recurring character on the show despite not appearing.

Parmeet Sethi jokes Kapil Sharma owes him royalty; ‘He uses my name so much…”

Sethi explained the scenario when speaking to Pinkvilla: “He should pay me royalty! I ask him to give me a royalty. He uses my name so much that even though I’m not physically present, I have become a character in that show.” He cheerfully added, “I’m happy that I can still be of some use somewhere.”

Delving into his prior work in comedy writing, Sethi noted that he has first-hand experience in the craft — having ghost-written and supervised a talk show featuring his wife, Archana Puran Singh, doing stand-up. He remarked that he thus appreciates the effort behind crafting jokes and praised Kapil’s improvisational talent. “He is an artist who doesn’t even need a script for performance,” Sethi said.

On his personal camaraderie with Kapil and his family, Sethi shared warm sentiments: “It is like family. Kapil is a sweetheart. Ginni (Kapil’s wife) is a sweetheart, his mother; they are all wonderful people, very homely. They love and respect us deeply, and we feel exactly the same way about them.” Concluding, he added, “Our relationship goes beyond just work.”

In short, what started as jest has highlighted Sethi’s playful take on his frequent mention by Kapil Sharma and underscored a deep-rooted fondness between the two entertainment personalities.

Ayushmann Khurrana’s Diwali release Thamma has opened to strong numbers at the box office in India on its first day. Celebrating the milestone, Ayushmann shared his excitement about achieving the biggest opening of his career with his first-ever Diwali release. He said, “I’m an entertainer so it brings me so much joy to see people loving and enjoying Thamma and my performance during this big Diwali holidays. When my visionary producer Dinesh Vijan had told me that Thamma was releasing in Diwali, I was thrilled because it was something that I was always wished to happen in my career.”

He further added, “Having carved a niche with my unique, quirky films, I was eagerly waiting for that one opportunity to bring my brand of cinema on Diwali – a festival that has seen the biggest of the biggest superstars release their tentpole films in. Thamma is the tentpole film of my career and I’m fortunate to have got Diwali to release it. Every year, I used to go to theatres with my family to watch a superstar’s film release. Today, I have gone to theatres to watch my film with my family. It feels incredible!”

Calling the success a validation of his journey in Hindi cinema, Ayushmann expressed gratitude for the audience’s response. “It’s almost a validation of my trajectory in Hindi cinema and I thank Dinesh Vijan for trusting me to play a character with no reference point like an Indian ‘betaal’. To see people enjoy to their fullest in theatres watching me play this character and convincing them to go on this joyride is truly an insane feeling.”

With positive word of mouth, Thamma is now poised to deliver the biggest opening weekend of Ayushmann’s career while adding a new dimension to Maddock’s expanding horror-comedy universe.

Reflecting on the response, the actor concluded, “The first day love that I have got, that the film has got, busts a lot of myths that people only want to see sequels and remakes and big superstar movies on Diwali. We scoring big with Thamma again shows that people want to see great content. Audiences are bringing their children, their families to watch my film during this festive period. Every actor wants to feel this, wants to see their films open on the biggest release dates like Diwali and become hugely successful! I’m happy I’m living this feeling with Thamma.”

Thamma features him alongside Rashmika Mandanna for the first time sparking much excitement about their chemistry in this unique love story. It also features Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Paresh Rawal among others and it is directed by Aditya Sarpotdar of Munjya fame.

After the remarkable success of their first collaboration ‘Payoji Maine’ last year, spiritual and motivational speaker Jaya Kishori and legendary playback singer Sonu Nigam reunite this Diwali for another soulful creation. Their latest devotional track, ‘Dekho Ram Aaye’, is a heartfelt bhajan dedicated to Lord Ram, released under Jaya Kishori’s music label, Unity Records, on 17th October.

Sonu Nigam and Jaya Kishori bring divine bliss this Diwali with ‘Dekho Ram Aaye’; song out now!

Sung by Sonu Nigam and Jaya Kishori, with heartfelt lyrics by Udaar, ‘Dekho Ram Aaye’ beautifully captures the divine essence of Diwali and the deep faith that unites millions of devotees in devotion to Lord Ram.

Speaking about the thought process behind the bhajan, Jaya Kishori shared, “We wanted to create something meaningful for this Diwali something that evokes the feeling of Lord Ram’s divine arrival. After the construction of the Ayodhya temple, the Diwali festival has become even more special, celebrated there with great grandeur. Now when people say, ‘Shri Ram wapas aa rahe hain,’ you can truly feel his divine presence at the Ayodhya Ram Mandir. We had the same emotion in our hearts while creating this bhajan. I gave the brief to my writer, Udaar, who came up with such beautiful lyrics. We’re very happy that the bhajan turned out exactly the way we envisioned it.”

On her second collaboration with Sonu Nigam, she expressed, “It feels amazing because ‘Payoji Maine’ was received so well by listeners. Collaborating with Sonu ji (Nigam) is truly a milestone for me, and getting the opportunity to sing with him again is a huge honour. I’m really happy that he decided to lend his voice to this bhajan for my label.”

Sharing why this project holds a special place in her heart, Jaya added, “This release is extra special for many reasons firstly, it’s coming out on Diwali, and secondly, it’s once again dedicated to Lord Ram. It’s also releasing under my record label, Unity Records, with Sonu ji singing for my label for the very first time. All of this makes it extremely special for me. Hopefully, Unity Records will continue to create more meaningful spiritual and devotional bhajans. After all, ‘Unity’ stands for collaboration and that’s exactly what our music represents.”

Gulshan Devaiah has zero regrets about turning down Mirzapur: “Some projects are great for your careers, but that’s not enough”

Gulshan Devaiah’s journey in cinema has been marked by steady growth and a strong commitment to his craft. The actor, who started his career with Anurag Kashyap’s That Girl in Yellow Boots (2010), has built a reputation for choosing challenging, complex roles that often explore the grey areas of human nature.

Gulshan Devaiah has zero regrets about turning down Mirzapur: "Some projects are great for your careers, but that's not enough"

With the success of Kantara Chapter 1, the Kannada film industry is finally recognizing one of its own — a talent who made his name in Hindi cinema. Directed by Rishab Shetty, Kantara Chapter 1 has become a box office sensation. It has overtaken films like Saaiyara, Coolie, War 2, and Lokah Chapter 1, making it the second-highest-grossing film of the year across languages.

Gulshan’s filmography includes notable titles such as Shaitan, Hunterrr, Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota, and Dahaad. Over the years, he has worked with some of the finest directors in contemporary Indian cinema. Yet, he remains candid about roles he admires from afar. “Half of Rajkummar Rao’s career!” he laughs. “Ayushmann Khurrana’s role in Andhadhun, Rajkummar’s in The White Tiger. Also, Varun Dhawan’s parts in October and Badlapur. I even told Varun and his dad, David Dhawan, that I’m burning with jealousy! I fantasized about doing Badlapur.”

Despite his admiration for these roles, Gulshan has no regrets about turning down parts, including the iconic roles of Guddu Bhaiya and Munna Bhaiya in Mirzapur, which were eventually played by Ali Fazal and Divyenndu Sharma. “No regrets, absolutely none,” he said. “Some projects are great for your career, but that’s not enough. I need a genuine reason to do them. Divyenndu and Ali did phenomenally well, and I’m happy for them.”

Born and raised in Bengaluru, Gulshan had never worked in Kannada films before Kantara Chapter 1, where he portrayed the menacing King Kulashekhara. That role changed everything for him. “Maybe in the Kannada film industry, they didn’t know me because people don’t regularly watch Hindi films or series,” he explained. “When my dad had an accident and was at the hospital for a hip replacement, suddenly all the staff — housekeeping, nurses — started saying, ‘Hey, you’re in Kantara!’ One of them even showed me a WhatsApp message from his son asking for a voice note. That’s when I realised the Kannada audience finally knew me.”

For Gulshan, the success of Kantara Chapter 1 goes beyond box office numbers, though he acknowledges their importance. “It definitely impacts my career. I won’t pretend I don’t care. I’ll give it the importance it deserves, but I won’t take it too seriously. Rishab gets all the credit — I’m just a small part of it. But yes, it empowers me. Prices will go up, and new opportunities will open up,” he said. “The key is to stay realistic. If I start outpricing myself, people will just move on to actors like Vijay Varma or Jaideep Ahlawat, who are both phenomenal and more expensive.”

He added with a laugh, “I’ve been around for nearly 15 years; I know what’s reasonable. It’s all about perception and being wise.”

Fifteen years since his debut, Gulshan Devaiah continues to balance instinct and intellect — an actor who understands that while success is about perception, dedication to craft is about conviction. With Kantara Chapter 1, he has found both — a film that brought him back home and introduced him to an audience that has finally embraced one of its own.

EXCLUSIVE: Ramesh Sippy’s hilarious take on Sholay’s forced ending change during Emergency: “Censors said ‘Thakur shouldn’t take law into his hands’ but he had no hands!”; BREAKS silence on Hema Malini’s DISAPPROVAL of Sholay’s changed climax

Sholay (1975) completed 50 years earlier this year, leading to a celebration among moviegoers. This is also the year when the restored print of the classic got screened in various prominent film festivals across the world, including the Toronto International Film Festival, which, incidentally, also celebrated its 50th year. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, its director, Ramesh Sippy, opened up about lesser-known trivia about his much-loved and hailed flick. He also displayed his witty sense of humour while answering our queries.

Recently, you attended the 70th Filmfare Awards, where Sholay was honoured for completing 50 years. During the 50th edition of Filmfare, Sholay was given the award of Best Film in 50 years. But when your film was released, it won the award in the Best Editing category only. Hence, when Sholay was hailed as the Best Film in 50 years and the same film was sidelined then, how was the feeling?
Well, that’s how it goes (smiles). It’s nothing against me; it’s against them. I don’t like to embarrass people. But by not giving us an award, they realized after 50 years that it wasn’t right.

Sholay ran for 5 long years at Minerva and was replaced by your own film (Shaan; 1980). How was the last day at Minerva for Sholay?
It ran full house, even on the last day. 99% of the seats were filled. That’s history. Out of 50 years, the film ran in Minerva for 5 years (smiles).

You recently have screened Sholay at various places in the world. How has the response been?
I saw the film in Toronto about a month ago. The audience reaction was unbelievable. It was like the film had just been released in Mumbai. They reacted the same way as the audience reacted in Mumbai then! I assumed that the audience would be slightly upper-class. But no, they were like clapping, whistling and repeating the lines.

Did the audience comprise viewers of Indian origins or locals?
A lot of them were Indians, as Canada has a lot of Indian population. So, obviously, those who were not acquainted with Indian cinema cannot react like them. A few of them who watch some Indian films may react, but not all of them. Nevertheless, it was a heartwarming feeling.

Many also got a chance to see the new ending of Sholay at these screenings. Hema Malini is not happy with this development…
(Smiles) Really? Did she say that?

Yes. She said ‘It should remain untouched’. I guess she means that it has got registered in the minds of people so deeply…
That’s true. For 50 years, this is the version that people are familiar with. Also, in 1975, it was the time of the Emergency. So, we couldn’t argue too much. But the end that I put in had to be shot (at the last minute). This changed climax was the same ending that took place in every film at that time. The police comes and says, ‘Ruk jaao’! So, it was a typical ending. That’s what I didn’t like; there was no other reason. However, the Censor officials stressed that ‘He’s an officer. He should not be taking the law into his hands’. Actually, I can’t say hands as he didn’t have any (laughs)!”

EXCLUSIVE: After the success of The Ba***ds Of Bollywood, can Gupt re-release in cinemas? Rajiv Rai explains, “No point re-releasing a film people have seen a trillion times; if somebody wants to pay me and do it, I’ll be okay”

It’s been a month since the release of The Ba***ds Of Bollywood and still it’s been discussed on the internet. It’s also a show that brought back Gupt (1997) into focus and also its unforgettable songs. This is also the era of re-releases. Hence, can there be a possibility of a re-release of Gupt? There’s a section of the audience, which didn’t see it in cinemas; they were too young or not even born when it came out in 1997. And with a boost in its popularity, thanks to Aryan Khan’s web series, Gupt can surprise at the ticket window in its repeat run.

Bollywood Hungama asked Gupt’s director, Rajiv Rai, about it. He said, “I don’t believe in re-releasing films because people have seen it a trillion times. Those films that haven’t worked earlier can succeed like Sanam Teri Kasam (2016). But I personally feel that re-releasing a successful film, which people have seen over and over again, doesn’t make sense to me. Moreover, it costs money to release. So, I am not interested. If somebody wants to pay me and do it, I’ll be okay. But I am not going to do it.”

He also said, “I am sure it’ll look good in cinemas if it releases, but it doesn’t excite me. I want to move ahead. For me, moving ahead means releasing the film on IMAX or releasing it on YouTube. It’s one extreme or the other (laughs). There’s nothing in the middle. There’s not much cinema left anymore – spending crores and then biting your nails because it’s very hard to recover that kind of money. It’s very risky. When you make a film for the cinema, you have to mount it in a certain way and for that, you have to spend a lot of money. Also, I don’t work for a very big star cast. So, it becomes very dicey. Even earlier, I never used to work with very big stars. They became stars in the process. In today’s times, to hire a big star is not possible.”

Rajiv Rai added, “I don’t want to take any risk. I am very happy in the zone that I am in. But if I get a good opportunity to make a film and I feel that it is financially viable, I’ll do it. I am not saying that I am closing my door completely, but I don’t see it happening. I am also not struggling to make an ambitious film. It’s not on my mind at all. So, I am not writing subjects, not day-dreaming about it. I am not ambitious about making a film like Sholay (1975). There are so many kids who are doing it. I don’t have that kind of energy left to put that kind of focus. You also need physical strength to pull it off. I am over 70; where am I going to get the physical strength? Being the producer, director, editor and financier is too much of a burden on me. In the past, I was even distributing. I can’t do all that anymore.”

He signed off by saying, “So, I don’t have the strength to run this marathon. If there’s an accident in the end, how will I sustain it? I no longer have the mental capacity to handle anxiety. Filmmaking causes a lot of anxiety, especially for a director-producer. I am sure even actors get anxious, but in our case, a lot of money gets involved. Even if it’s somebody else’s money, you will be worried. So, when you start making a film with worry, it’s not good. Moreover, we don’t have that Hollywood-style system, though we pretend we do! There, they even hire 80 and 90-year-old directors and those directors are not stressed as everything is laid out for them. They even get a good cut of it and are dealt properly. The finances are fair. Here, everything is hotch-potch. You don’t know whom to trust. Sab oopar-neeche hai idhar.”
