Janhvi Kapoor opens up on alcohol addiction: “Don’t abuse it – recognise when you’re crossing the line”

In a candid and deeply reflective conversation with podcast host Raj Shamani, Janhvi Kapoor addressed the often-overlooked issue of alcohol addiction, shedding light on its far-reaching emotional and social impact.

Speaking about her personal experiences and observations, the actor emphasised the urgent need to view addiction through a more informed and compassionate lens. “The concept of addiction has been a big villain in my life. I’ve seen many people around me fall prey to addiction. There’s still a lot of stigma attached to addiction—especially alcohol,” she shared.

Janhvi, who is associated with Amaha, revealed that her initiative focuses on spreading awareness and making reliable support systems more accessible. Through her interactions with medical professionals, she has gained a deeper understanding of behavioural patterns and effective responses to addiction.

“One key learning: addiction is a medical condition—like mental health issues, cancer, or a broken bone. It’s often linked to compromised mental well-being,” she explained, underlining the importance of treating the issue as a health concern rather than a moral failing.

Reflecting on the challenges faced by caregivers, she said, “I’ve taken on the role of a caregiver. And caregivers carry a lot of guilt. You don’t know if you’re doing enough—or making things worse.” She also highlighted how frequently such struggles surface in everyday conversations. “In society, how often do we hear—‘my husband drinks and hits me’? Someone addicted rarely realises it. There are over 100 million children globally with an addicted family member.”

Offering practical insights, Janhvi cautioned against confrontational approaches. “Never confront someone when they’re intoxicated. And never approach them with an accusatory tone—even when they’re sober. I’ve done that—and it causes more damage. When you accuse them—‘you drink too much’—it triggers defensiveness. And can push them into another binge.”

She further elaborated on behavioural red flags and emotional triggers, stating, “People drink for many reasons—escape, confidence issues, anxiety… They become dependent on it. When you accuse them, it becomes too much to handle… And they just go—‘forget it, I’ll drink even more.’”

Discussing warning signs, she noted, “For me, it was always a red flag when someone is intoxicated during the day. When someone drinks alone. When someone disappears… When they’re vague about where they’re going or where they were. For me, that’s an immediate red flag.”

Highlighting the role of societal attitudes, Janhvi added, “Society pushes them away, treats them badly, so they don’t even get a chance to come back to normal life. At least there, addiction is talked about openly. Here, people hide it.”

She also referenced a behavioural study to explain the importance of environment in recovery. “Rat Experiment – There were two rats. Both were given drugs and became addicted. When one was denied the drug, it died. But the other one, placed in an enriched environment with activities— Like games, stimulation—it got busy and stopped asking for drugs. That’s why I say—play cricket, stay engaged.”

With her initiative, Janhvi Kapoor hopes to spark a more open and empathetic dialogue around alcohol addiction—one that prioritises awareness, understanding, and meaningful support.
