Filmmaker David Dhawan has opened up about actor Rakesh Bedi’s recent surge in popularity following his performance in the Dhurandhar duology, saying the recognition comes after decades of consistent work and is well deserved.
Bedi’s portrayal of Jameel Jamali in Dhurandhar The Revenge attracted strong audience attention and quickly became a talking point online. The character’s popularity also translated into brand visibility, with the actor recently leading a digital campaign for Crocs India built around everyday moments.
Speaking to Bollywood Hungama during promotions for his upcoming directorial Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, Dhawan reflected on his long association with Bedi and the response to his recent performances.
“He studied with me at FTII. Our friendship is 50 years old. He has worked in many of my films. He is in this one too. I told him, ‘For 50 years nobody recognised you, now finally they have. He is a fine actor. He was always a very good actor. Now he is crossing 70 and getting recognition, but that’s good. He fully deserved it. You can see the spark in him. Even the way he walks has changed. We still keep talking regularly. He has been my classmate from the beginning,’” he said.
Recalling their early years together, Dhawan also shared that the two went through ragging during their time at Film and Television Institute of India.
“When we went there, ragging used to happen,” he said, adding with a laugh that both of them faced it together as students.
Meanwhile, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, which features Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur, is scheduled to release on June 5, 2026. Dhawan confirmed that Bedi is also part of the film, continuing their long creative association that spans several decades.
