Rekha reveals she was in support of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to play Umrao Jaan

In 1981, Rekha immortalized herself playing the enigmatic enchanting Lucknowi 19th century courtesan Umrao Jaan Adaa who danced into a poetic doom. When Umrao Jaan was on the verge of being revitalized by Aishwarya Rai, Rekha was all for J.P.Dutta’s remake. Rekha shocked me by saying she “sleepwalked” through Umrao Jaan. “I mean it. I don’t remember a single shot or moment. I was thoroughly disinterested in what I was doing.”

Rekha reveals she was in support of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to play Umrao Jaan

But what about the stunning dances? “That’s no big deal. I think I danced well even in Sheshnaag. How many people remember that film? It’s not the dances that make a film.” She was all for the remake. “Why not? I’m all for Umrao Jaan being remade. If a filmmaker has the conviction, belief, need and desire to remake Umrao, then I see nothing wrong it. The enthusiasm with which J.P. Dutta has chosen the subject proves his heart in it. I’m completely for the project. I’ve no doubt JP Saab must have really done his best with the subject. And all my best wishes are with the project. He’s one of our few filmmakers with the vision. He’s one of the few remaining stalwarts of our cinema. And JP has an insight into both classic and contemporary cinema. His father (O.P Dutta) goes back a long way. JP himself has worked with some of the best talent of the bygone era and continues to work with the best today.”

Rekha got nostalgic about J.P. Dutta. “We go back a long way. He was an assistant to Randhir Kapoor when I was working in RK. Films’ Dharam Karam. JP has a great command over language. He knows all about the grace elegance and dignity of the old world. If he could portray Kareena Kapoor so gracefully in Refugee I don’t see why he won’t do justice to Umrao. He has an eye for feminine grace.”

The mystical diva was all praise for Aishwarya. “I’m really curious to see what she has done in Umrao Jaan. She was fabulous in Sanjay Bhansali’s Devdas though she had a hard act to follow up. Everyone wondered what she would be able to do after what Suchitra Sen had done as Paro in Bimal Roy’s Devdas. I’m sure the comparisons with me would stop after Umrao Jaan is released.”

Rekha endorsed the trend of remakes. “What I did was Umaro Jaan in the 1980s. One has to move with the times with open times, keeping in mind what today’s young viewers demand and how much technological improvement has been made achieved over the years and how much of the values beauty and simplicity of the original can be retained. I think Sanjay Bhansali achieved that difficult transition in Devdas. I’m sure J.P Dutta will do the same.”

She admitted to a fascination with the way Sanjay Bhansali presented Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai in Devdas. “The NRIs went crazy over the setting and costumes. To have Birju Maharaj contributing in today’s day and age wasn’t short of a miracle.I’d do anything to be in his film. Even if I just have to hold a file for film I’d do it gladly. I’ve offered to be his assistant. But he doesn’t want to scandalize his staff. I admire Sanjay Bhansali as a filmmaker. Ek saaf suthra insaan hai. And yes, there’s no finer filmmaker from our era. He has the soul of Mehboob Uncle (Khan) and Guru Dutt.”

She reverted to Umrao Jaan. “I think Aishwarya will do ample justice to the role. I think she’ll be projected in a way that she has never been. And I’m sure she enjoyed every bit of it. I’m really looking forward to seeing the film. I know it will be fantastic.”

Pushpa 2 Box Office: Allu Arjun starrer surpasses Stree 2, becomes the Highest-Grossing Hindi film ever; collects Rs. 632.50 cr in 15 Days

Pushpa 2 – The Rule, starring Allu Arjun, that released on December 5, 2024 has been doing roaring business. After witnessing an immense rate of advance bookings, the business of the film roared on day 1 with staggering collections. Surrounded with immense hype and anticipation, Pushpa 2 has not just dominated the box office but has also rewritten records in its first two weeks of release. The film has crossed a monumental Rs. 632.50 crore mark in just 15 days, making it the highest-grossing Hindi film of all time, surpassing the Rajkummar Rao – Shraddha Kapoor starrer Stree 2, which previously held the record. This achievement is all the more impressive considering that Pushpa 2 is primarily a Telugu film dubbed in Hindi, and it continues to captivate audiences across India and abroad.

Pushpa 2 Box Office: Allu Arjun starrer surpasses Stree 2, becomes the Highest-Grossing Hindi film ever; collects Rs. 632.50 cr in 15 Days

Released on a Thursday, Pushpa 2 – The Rule opened to a massive reception, with fans eagerly flocking to theatres to witness Allu Arjun’s return as the iconic Pushpa Raj. The film made an incredible ₹433.50 crore in its first week alone, despite being released during a relatively less favourable time in terms of competition.

The film’s debut was nothing short of phenomenal. By the end of its first week (8 days), Pushpa 2 had already grossed Rs. 433.50 crore globally, with a significant contribution from the Hindi belt. The film’s Hindi version alone amassed a staggering Rs. 250 crore in the opening week, signalling the growing fanbase of Allu Arjun outside of South India. This number broke several records for a South Indian film in the Hindi market, firmly establishing Allu Arjun as a pan-Indian star.

The film’s gripping narrative, powerful performances, and mass appeal coupled with stellar action sequences drove audiences to theatres, leading to a consistently strong box office performance. With positive word-of-mouth and high demand for repeat viewings, Pushpa 2 not only set a box office benchmark but also generated significant buzz on social media, further propelling its success.

Even after the euphoria of the opening week, Pushpa 2 continued to perform exceptionally well in its second week. The film collected Rs. 199 crore globally in its second week, further consolidating its place in the history of Indian cinema. While the collections saw a slight dip in the second week, this was expected as most films experience a drop after the opening wave. However, given the intense competition from other big-budget releases, the numbers are still a testament to the film’s massive appeal.

In just 15 days, Pushpa 2 – The Rule has grossed Rs. 632.50 crore globally, making it the highest-grossing Hindi film of all time. This milestone surpasses Stree 2, which had previously held the record with a lifetime gross of Rs. 600 crore. For a film that is not a traditional Hindi-language production, this is an extraordinary feat.

The film’s success is also a reflection of the growing demand for South Indian cinema across the country. The Hindi-speaking audience has increasingly embraced films dubbed from regional languages, and Pushpa 2 is a prime example of how language barriers are being broken down in the Indian film industry.

As Pushpa 2 continues to perform at an impressive pace, the film’s overall lifetime collections are expected to rise significantly, with the possibility of crossing the Rs. 700 crore mark in the coming weeks. Its success has already set the stage for a potential third installment, and fans are eagerly awaiting what’s next in the saga of Pushpa Raj.

Pushpa 2 – The Rule Box Office at a glance:

Week 1: Rs.  433.50 cr [8 days; Thursday release]

Week 2: Rs.  199 cr

Total: Rs. 632.50 cr

Fans loved Salman Khan’s mass appearance, his applause-worthy dialogues and also the production design and visual appeal. Another factor that worked in its favour is the catchy background score. Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to Santosh Narayanan, the background music composer, about the feedback and a lot more.

EXCLUSIVE: Santosh Narayanan ECSTATIC with the response to background music in Sikandar's teaser: "Salman Khan's inputs work WONDERS; people will CELEBRATE the phenomenon of Salman in the film"

When asked about the feedback, Santosh Narayanan said, “I am filled with overwhelming positive feedback for the teaser. Though I consciously work for the audience to connect with such themes, the response was beyond what I could even dream of. I am so grateful to Salman sir, Murugadoss sir (director A R Murugadoss), Sajid sir (producer Sajid Nadiadwala) and the audience for accepting my humble attempt.”

What can we expect from Sikandar the film and Salman Khan’s character? Santosh Narayanan replied, “I personally feel that people will celebrate the phenomenon of Salman Khan massively in Sikandar as the character in the film is so brilliantly weaved into the persona of the man himself. Lastly, we asked him about working with Salman Khan and whether he gave any inputs. Santosh revealed, “Salman sir is a charm. He has been constantly following up with all work and provides inputs whenever needed and it has worked wonders for me. Anurag Kashyap calls Hindi filmmakers “Dumb” for ignoring core audience; REVEALS Gangs of Wasseypur and Mukkabaaz weren’t released in North India

Anurag Kashyap has shared his perspective on why South Indian films have captured a significant share of the North Indian market. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India, Kashyap highlighted how Bollywood’s neglect of its core audience has allowed South cinema to thrive, even with dubbed films.

Anurag Kashyap calls Hindi filmmakers “Dumb” for ignoring core audience; REVEALS Gangs of Wasseypur and Mukkabaaz weren’t released in North India

Anurag Kashyap Recalls Missed Opportunities in Distribution

Kashyap recounted instances from his own career to illustrate Bollywood’s missteps. He revealed that his critically acclaimed films, Gangs of Wasseypur and Mukkabaaz, were not properly distributed in North India due to a flawed strategy by the production house.

“Our audience was ignored collectively. For example, during Covid, I found out that my two films – Gangs of Wasseypur and Mukkabaaz – which now have a very core audience in North India, weren’t released in North India. I found out, during a distribution meeting, that my North Indian films weren’t released across North India because the studio decided that my core audience is in Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, and Hyderabad and that’s it. That’s how dumb they are,” said Kashyap.

He further shared an anecdote about a theatre owner in Bihar who had pleaded with the production house to release the film in his region. However, the request was denied due to the additional costs of making a Digital Cinema Package (DCP).

Anurag Kashyap Shares Thoughts on The Rise of South Cinema

Kashyap explained how South Indian filmmakers have successfully tapped into the Hindi-speaking audience, a segment Bollywood has largely overlooked. He cited the example of the YouTube channel Goldmines, which gained popularity by dubbing South films in Hindi and distributing them widely.

“We make Hindi films but we have ignored the Hindi film audience, and the advantage was taken by this man who created the YouTube channel Goldmines where he started picking films from South at cheap rates, dubbed them and started catering to that Hindi audience. And that audience got built so much that, Pushpa 2’s trailer was released in Patna,” Kashyap noted.

The filmmaker also highlighted how the preferences of the North Indian audience have shifted. Traditionally loyal to Bollywood stars like Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan, this audience now admires South Indian stars, thanks to the increased accessibility of their films.

Hansal Mehta calls out Naga Vamsi after the latter boasts about Pushpa 2’s success; calls him ‘arrogant’ on social media

It is a known fact that Pushpa 2 – The Rule has created record-breaking numbers and has emerged to be one of the biggest success stories of Indian Cinema, also making it the biggest blockbuster of the year. While discussing the same during a recent round table conference, producer Naga Vamsi made a statement about the impact of the film on Bollywood and Hindi Cinema, which left Hansal Mehta fuming.

Hansal Mehta responds to Naga Vamsi’s claims about Mumbai having sleepless nights

Speaking to Galatta Plus, Naga Vamsi explained how the success of Pushpa 2 has left many jealous. He said, “I don’t think whole mumbai would’ve slept when #Pushpa2 did 86C+ in single day. Highest ever”. While many social media users reacted to this statement, among them was also filmmaker Hansal Mehta, who slammed the producer saying, “Chill dude whoever you are… I live in Mumbai. Been sleeping really well.”

Filmmaker reveals how Vamsi’s last film Lucky Baskhar was ‘taken’ from his series Scam

In another post, Hansal Mehta once again called out Naga Vamsi for his ‘arrogance’ and said, “Since this person Mr Naga Vamsi was being so arrogant and now that I know who he is : His latest hit as a producer Lucky Bhaskar has borrowed liberally from the Scam series. Reason I brought this up is that I feel happy that stories travel and a film in another language suceeds in replicating what has worked for us. Everybody wins. Nobody is bigger than the other. That narrative is destructive. Arrogance is even worse. To all those haters coming at me on my TL – see you in 2025.”

For the unversed, Lucky Baskhar featured Dulquer Salmaan in the lead role, who decides to climb up the social ladder by taking an unethical route after he is constantly humiliated and insulted for his financial status whereas Hansal Mehta’s Scam was inspired by real life incidents related to the Harshad Mehta story based on the 1992 Indian stock market scam.

Arjun Kapoor reveals Vikrant Massey did a better job in Half Girlfriend; says, “He is much more nuanced in that sense”

While a lot of praises are coming his way for his performance in Singham Again, Arjun Kapoor recalled some of his past works which received a lot of criticism. The actor opened up about the kind of comments that were made about his acting in the film Half Girlfriend and also went on to discuss what went wrong.  The actor also confessed that his co-star in the film, Vikrant Massey, who played his best friend in the movie, did a brilliant job and appreciated his dubbing and acting skills.

Arjun Kapoor reveals Vikrant Massey did a better job in Half Girlfriend; says, “He is much more nuanced in that sense”

In an interview with Galatta Plus, Arjun Kapoor revealed that it was his dubbing that impacted the character he played in Half Girlfriend. Stating the issues he faced in getting the dialect right, he said, “I wish I didn’t have to dub for Half Girlfriend with the dialect. I think I had done a good job on the set but then unfortunately, I had to dub and I am not somebody who is very fond of dubbing because it undermines the honesty in that moment. Also, we, in this generation don’t dub all the time. Not to say it was my worst or whatever but I look back as a critic and I wish I was able to retain the pilot, I was much better at my dialect. You learn the dialect and perform it.”

During the same interaction, the actor went on to add how Vikrant Massey performed his role very well. “Like Vikrant is much better in the dub. He is a much better actor in the film also, is much more nuanced in that sense. I was supposed to play more to the gallery but I was not able to get the dialect bang on in the dub which I had in the pilot. So that’s a minor look back and learning experience for me.”

For the unversed, Vikrant Massey plays the role of Shailesh Khanna, who is a close friend of Madhav Jha aka Arjun Kapoor and often tries to protect him from getting hurt. Speaking of Half Girlfriend, the movie starring Shraddha Kapoor, is based on the Chetan Bhagat novel by the same name.

20 Years of Musafir EXCLUSIVE: Sanjay Gupta reveals Sanjay Dutt had hearty laugh when Oliver Stone praised his role of Billa and left Anil Kapoor stunned; opens up on light-hearted dig at Sholay: “I didn’t mean any disrespect. I can never do that”

The stylish action film Musafir (2004) completed 20 years earlier this month. It was Sanjay Gupta’s next directorial after Kaante (2002) and hence, it generated huge excitement. The coming together of Sanjay Dutt and Anil Kapoor and the casting of Sameera Reddy and Koena Mitra added to the buzz. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Sanjay Gupta spoke about the film and a lot more.

What made you make this film after Kaante, especially when the industry probably expected you to make a grander commercial film?
I never made a film thinking, ‘Now that I have delivered a Kaante or Aatish (1994), let me do something bigger’. I make whatever comes to me organically. Moreover, dark noir was a space rarely visited that too on a grander, larger-than-life scale with great music and great actors. Also, I was just having fun while making this film.

Sanjay Dutt’s look was dashing. His sidelocks extended to his beard and it had become a rage after Salman Khan’s haircut in Tere Naam (2003). How was his look decided?
Sanju’s character was not there originally! I had worked on the screenplay when one day, Sanju dropped by my house late at night. He said that he wanted to discuss something with me. When I asked about it, he replied, ‘How are you making a movie without me?’. I told him ‘I wanted to make this film. Hence, I am making it’. He said, ‘You make whatever film you want’. When I pointed out that Anil Kapoor is the hero, he stated, ‘I don’t care. I’ll do anything but I have to be there in the film’. He left, leaving me with a huge responsibility. I informed my writers that we need to add a character though he won’t have much screen time. But I instructed them to have as much fun as possible with it, be it with looks, songs and dialogues. I also said that every scene of his should be like an introduction, whether he comes with a knife, hoodie, bike, etc.

As for styling him, I told him, ‘Sanju, I have written your character completely insanely! Now we can style him similarly’. Sanju and I both were going on a holiday to LA (Los Angeles, USA) where we shopped for trench coats, fancy pants, shoes, etc. He picked up the butterfly knife and learned how to use it. I decided to incorporate it into the film.

Was Anil Kapoor the original choice?
Yes, always. Anil and Sameera Reddy were the original choices. It was written keeping them in mind.

The IMDb trivia section mentions that Suniel Shetty left the film due to its bold, sexual content and that even Priyanka Chopra declined…
Not at all (laughs).

Musafir’s soundtrack was out of the world and has a following even today. It was composed by Vishal-Shekhar, who had composed one song in Kaante (‘Chhod Na Re’). What made you sign them to compose all the songs of Musafir?
This was the first big film of Vishal-Shekhar. Earlier, they had done a small film with Sujoy Ghosh, Jhankaar Beats (2003). The little time I spent with them, I knew that they were incredibly talented. I told them that I was making a dark noir musical. If you go back in time and look at the Hindi noir films of the 50s, like CID (1956), Chor Bazar (1954), etc., they were all musicals. The music was so important in establishing the dark characters in shadowed light. I wondered – why did we leave that tradition behind?

In Musafir, each and every song was a blockbuster, be it ‘Saaki’, ‘Door Se Pass’, ‘Zindagi Mein Kabhi Koi Aaye Na Rabba’ or ‘Ishq Kabhi Kario Na’. And the way we presented Sameera Reddy, I don’t think she was ever presented like that again. She became the breakout star after the movie. Koena Mitra arrived on the scene with a bang.

Anil Kapoor appears without a shirt in the beginning and the audience is surprised to see him without hair on his chest…
Yes. I had also asked him to work out, and put on weight. The way Anil Kapoor was styled in that film, he had never been styled before that way. He was never called ultra-fashionable and cool until Musafir.

Did you visit cinema halls to check the audience reaction?
It was a massive success and people loved it. Nobody went into the cinema hall expecting a film like that from me. After Kaante, everyone expected a gritty big-scale action drama. But this was far from it. Also, besides Sanjay Dutt, the character of Mahesh Manjrekar resonated with the audience. After Kaante, he delivered a brilliant performance yet again.

Did you get the feedback that Sanjay Dutt should have had a longer role? After all, he was too good in the film…
No, never. Sanju, in fact, often tells me that he wants to play Billa again. He asks for a film cantering on Billa. The character is iconic; you had never seen something like this before, with those clothes, 1800 cc Honda motorcycle, cigar, speaking the way he did and his dialogues. There was something about the aura of that character. Ultimately, it’s the character that you remember, not the movies. Even now, 20 years later, we still discuss about it. So you never know. We might just come back with Billa’s story.

In an important scene, Billa kills a man but he lets his young kid survive. Billa also jokes that this kid will grow up and try to kill him 20 years later. Coincidentally, 20 years have passed since Musafir was released. Would you like to take this angle for Musafir’s sequel?
(Smiles) One of my writers came up with that idea as well. He pointed out that the boy was 9 or 10 years old in Musafir. So, he’ll be 30 in today’s times and he has prepared for the last 20 years to take revenge on Billa. So, the sequel can be how Billa deals with that revenge.

However, I had reservations. This is because Billa’s character is so iconic and big that anybody who comes to take revenge will get squashed by him. It’s just a simple one-line revenge story. We need a tagdi kahani.

The first dialogue of the film is by Billa and he takes a light-hearted dig at Sholay (1975). Any idea if Ramesh Sippy saw Musafir and did he ever speak to you about it?
(Laughs) No. Ramesh ji is far too dignified. If he ever sees it, he’ll see it as a compliment because I didn’t mean any disrespect. I can never do that. They are my fathers in the industry; Sippy Films gave me a break. And it was in gest.

First, Quentin Tarantino saw Kaante and loved it though it was inspired by his film Reservoir Dogs (1992). Musafir, which was inspired by U Turn (1997), was seen by its director Oliver Stone. Did you ever get a chance to speak to Oliver about it?
No, but there was a point when he was casting for one of his films. He was in New York and so was Anil Kapoor. Kapoor saab went to meet him as he was also trying to make his career in Hollywood. He asked Oliver Stone if he had a role for an Indian in his film. He replied in the affirmative and added, ‘I saw Musafir, the movie which you guys made’. He also said, ‘It’s a really great movie’. Then he asked, ‘Who was the guy with the knife?’. Anil Kapoor told me, ‘I didn’t know what to say. I was struggling and asking me to cast me but he was interested in Sanjay Dutt aka the guy with the knife’ (laughs)!

What was Sanjay Dutt’s reaction to this episode?
He had a hearty laugh. Nevertheless, for me, it was huge and also the second time when a Hollywood filmmaker praised me. First, Tarantino said that he loved Kaante and then it was Oliver Stone.
