20th anniversary EXCLUSIVE: Aashiq Banaya Aapne was made in just 36 days; was born from a shelved Gujarati film and prepaid music deal with Himesh Reshammiya – Aditya Datt shares UNBELIEVABLE inside story

The musical romantic thriller, Aashiq Banaya Aapne (2005), completed 20 years on September 2. The film is remembered for its casting, intimate scenes and of course, the unforgettable music. It was the first film where Himesh Reshammiya turned singer and thus a new chapter was written with Aashiq Banaya Aapne. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, its director Aditya Datt explained how he made the film before hitting the age of 20 and a lot more.

20th anniversary EXCLUSIVE: Aashiq Banaya Aapne was made in just 36 days; was born from a shelved Gujarati film and prepaid music deal with Himesh Reshammiya – Aditya Datt shares UNBELIEVABLE inside story

How did you manage to make your first film so early in life?
I got into filmmaking as an assistant very early, just after completing my 10th grade. I was working with Mahesh Bhatt and I was his DA/assistant. So, I was working with everyone from Vikram Bhatt to Tanuja Chandra to Bhatt saab. My job was to go wherever the shoot was taking place. I quit my studies after the 10th as I knew I wasn’t an academically driven kid. I believed that at the max, I’d scrape through college. I had no desire to go for interviews with a graduate certificate to bag a job. Because of my grandfather (late lyricist Anand Bakshi), I knew that I wanted to do something in the creative field. He could relate to my sentiment as he was not educated either. However, my parents and sisters are highly educated. My sister has studied at Oxford and LA and secured a law degree. My mom was a Maharashtrian topper while my dad was a top UP scholar! Hence, I was the black sheep of the family (laughs)!

When you declare that you are no longer going to walk on the path of education, people start judging and assuming that ‘This guy is not serious about his life’. That made me even more responsible. It made me realize that if I have taken such a bold step, I need to work harder and achieve more things. Luckily, I got to learn from mentors like Bhatt saab, Tanuja Chandra and Vikram Bhatt. I got a chance to assist on films like Raaz (2002), Kasoor (2001), Yeh Zindagi Ka Safar (2001), Sur (2002), etc. For 4-5 years, I worked with them.

Then the natural course was to try to direct a film. I went around pitching my script. Now, in my head, I wasn’t 19. I was just like any other assistant with 4-5 years of experience. Meanwhile, by then, my grandfather had passed away. So, I no longer had that backing. It was a very weird case of nepotism! I did get an entry in the industry and worked with the Bhatts. But when I wanted my grandfather to be there and help me pitch my scripts to big production houses like Dharma Productions, Yash Raj Films, Mukta Arts, etc., with whom he had worked extensively, he was no longer there. I did not have an introduction to them anymore, as my grandfather was the only one interacting with them. I did not have access and when I tried, I could not get through those doors.

Then, I finally found a very sweet gentleman called Balabhai Patel, who was a Gujarati film producer. He was trying to make a film, but it got stalled. In those days, filmmakers used to shoot on film and not on digital. So, he had brought a certain amount of negative for that film before it got stalled. He heard my script and then asked me about the budget. At that time, you needed Rs. 2.50 crores to Rs. 3 crores to make a film. The major chunk of the budget would go in buying the negatives. Luckily, he had pre-bought the negatives. Coincidentally, he had already given a signing amount to Himesh Reshammiya sir; he was supposed to compose music for that Gujarati film. Hence, Mr Balabhai had two clauses – I should shoot the film using the negatives he had bought and I should have Himesh sir as the music composer. Whatever more money was required, he would generate, but it would be cut-to-cut. At that point in time, I was okay with anything and I agreed. I somehow convinced Emraan. Sonu was upcoming and Tanushree had won the Femina Miss India Universe. They all agreed. I remember shooting the film in just 36 days.

Were Emraan Hashmi, Sonu Sood and Tanushree Dutta the original choices?
Yes. While writing the story, I had already narrated it to Emraan and to Sonu. Later, Tanushree also came in.

Emraan’s casting worked as we all expected him to be the villain. Those were the days when he was playing mainly negative roles…
Yes, it worked. Honestly, at that point, the greed was to make a film. There was a lot of immaturity in that film as well as we were all kids. Sometimes, you look back and feel, ‘I should have learned the craft a little more before jumping into it’. At the same time, however, you are happy that it did well. The music obviously was a big hit. The box office outcome was great for its time. It had an 80% opening. After that, I had many ups and downs. But I was lucky enough to see great ups. My biggest learning experiences were from my failures. It made me understand what not to do rather than what to do. With filmmaking, you need to keep learning every day. At no point can you say that you know it all. That just can’t happen.

Interestingly, Gangster (2006), released a year later and it started the same way as Aashiq Banaya Aapne – the hero and the heroine are injured and are taken to the hospital. Do you feel Anurag Basu was inspired by Aashiq Banaya Aapne?
(Laughs) Not at all. Anurag sir is a very senior filmmaker. I never felt that way at all.

Veteran producer and cinematographer Prem Sagar, known for carrying forward the legacy of the Sagar family in Indian cinema and television, passed away yes morning at 10 AM. He was 77.

Prem Sagar, veteran producer and cinematographer, passes away at 77

An alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, Prem Sagar belonged to the 1968 batch. His rigorous training at FTII laid the foundation for his career in photography and cinematography, skills that he later used to define the look and feel of several memorable productions.

As the son of legendary filmmaker Ramanand Sagar, Prem Sagar played a vital role in Sagar Arts, the family production house. He worked behind the camera as a cinematographer and photographer for a number of their films, while also contributing as a producer to key projects. Sagar Arts holds a special place in Indian entertainment history, particularly for bringing the iconic television series Ramayan to audiences in the late 1980s—a show that went on to become a cultural landmark.

Prem Sagar’s creative contributions helped shape the visual identity of many projects under the Sagar Arts banner. While his father Ramanand Sagar is remembered for Ramayan, Prem Sagar ensured the family’s work remained relevant through later ventures, extending the legacy into the modern era of television.

His passing marks the end of an era for the Sagar family, who have been central to the growth of both Indian cinema and television. For generations of viewers, the name Sagar has been synonymous with storytelling rooted in Indian culture and mythology.

Prem Sagar’s death is a great loss to the film and television fraternity. As family, friends, and fans bid him farewell, his work and dedication to visual storytelling will continue to be remembered as an integral part of the Sagar family’s contribution to Indian entertainment.

Did Farah Khan just confirm the secret wedding of Nargis Fakhri? Viral video with Tony Beig sparks buzz

Nargis Fakhri has once again become the talk of the town, this time not for a film project but for her personal life. A video from a recent high-profile event celebrating the collaboration between Visit Qatar and the Nita Ambani Cultural Centre is going viral on social media, all thanks to a playful moment between the actress, filmmaker Farah Khan, and Nargis’ longtime beau Tony Beig.

Did Farah Khan just confirm the secret wedding of Nargis Fakhri? Viral video with Tony Beig sparks buzz

The clip shows Nargis posing with paparazzi alongside Farah Khan, when Farah can be seen calling out to Tony Beig, seemingly asking him to stand “near his wife.” While Farah’s words weren’t audible, eagle-eyed fans on social media were quick to lip-read the moment — and they are convinced that Farah just casually confirmed the actress’ marriage.

This candid exchange has reignited chatter about reports that surfaced earlier this year, claiming Nargis had tied the knot with the US-based businessman in a hush-hush ceremony in California. Although no official photos of the bride and groom emerged, a series of glimpses from the intimate event, including a wedding cake adorned with the initials ‘NF & TB’, had gone viral in February, sparking speculation.

Despite the mounting buzz, Nargis has remained tight-lipped about her alleged marriage. Even during her recent appearance in the ensemble comedy Housefull 5, the actress refrained from addressing questions about her personal life.

The viral video, however, has given fans just the kind of confirmation they were waiting for. With Farah Khan’s playful nudge, social media is flooded with congratulatory messages, fan edits, and curiosity over why Nargis chose to keep her big day under wraps.

Whether or not the actress makes an official statement, one thing is certain — the internet has already declared Nargis Fakhri and Tony Beig as Bollywood’s newest secretly married couple!

Mumbai’s Famous Studios to be demolished for a 69-Storey luxury tower marking the end of an era

Another slice of Mumbai’s cinematic legacy is set to disappear. Famous Studios, the 79-year-old film hub in Mahalaxmi that once echoed with lights, cameras, and action, will soon be razed to make room for a glitzy residential skyscraper.

Mumbai’s Famous Studios to be demolished for a 69-Storey luxury tower marking the end of an era

The studio, founded in 1943 by J. B. Roongta, has been a part of Bollywood’s history for nearly eight decades, offering state-of-the-art facilities for shooting, sound recording, and post-production. From iconic films to ad shoots, countless projects passed through its gates, making it a landmark in the city’s creative ecosystem. But the curtains are finally coming down.

Reports suggest that the landowners themselves will be sealing the deal and currently quite keen on partnering with K Raheja Corp Real Estate. It has been learnt that they have finalized plans to redevelop the 70,000 sq ft plot into a high-rise residential tower. According to layouts submitted to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the new project will rise 69 floors above Mahalaxmi, with apartments starting from the ninth floor. Designed as plush 3- and 4-BHK homes, each residence will offer sweeping views of the Arabian Sea and Mahalaxmi Race Course.

The commercial component of the project will be minimal, with the majority of the 4.3 lakh sq ft of built-up area reserved for luxury homes. A mixed-use tag aside, the emphasis is clear—Mahalaxmi’s evolving skyline is leaning heavily toward upscale living.

Interestingly, the redevelopment plan also takes into account connectivity with the Mumbai Metro. The upcoming tower is expected to fall within 500 metres of the Science Museum Metro Station, and feasibility studies are already exploring a direct vestibule link between the two.

If this deal is sealed, for K Raheja Corp, this will mark their third major residential project in Mahalaxmi after Vivarea and Modern Vivarea, further solidifying the area’s transformation into a high-end residential hotspot.

The demolition of Famous Studios is expected to begin by the end of the year, likely before Christmas The move comes on the heels of similar redevelopments, including Goregaon’s Filmistan Studio, which is also being replaced by luxury towers. With nearly 80 years of cinematic legacy behind it, the studio will now soon be confined to memories and archives as it gears up to join the long list of Mumbai’s iconic film addresses lost to the city’s ever-rising skyline.

From Desi Edits to Global Fandom: The Summer I Turned Pretty took over pop culture

From the heartfelt beach confession between Conrad and Belly to the stylish summer looks of the cast, The Summer I Turned Pretty has been trending widely on social media. Jenny Han’s drama has struck a chord with audiences through its relatable storylines, with fans across India sharing edits and reactions online. With weekly episodes, the show continues to engage viewers and spark discussions around plot twists and character dynamics. Alongside this series, Prime Video’s other Originals—Maggie Q’s crime drama Ballard and Daniel Dae Kim’s Korean drama Butterfly—have also been gaining attention and contributing to the platform’s strong global viewership.

From Desi Edits to Global Fandom The Summer I Turned Pretty took over pop culture

Vernon Sanders, Head of TV at Prime Video (US), explained that the recent successes reflect the platform’s long-term strategy to create stories with global appeal. The Summer I Turned Pretty, which drew 25 million viewers in its first week, highlights how this approach is resonating with audiences. The performance of the series also indicates that female-led shows can achieve significant reach and that Asian leads can connect with viewers even in narratives where race is not the main focus.

“When you try to force something, sometimes you don’t get the results you’re looking for. So we’ve been at this a while,” Sanders explained. “Albert Cheng and I used to be co-Heads of TV together, and it was something we talked a lot about a lot back in the days, about how we find organic ways to tell stories that would resonate all around the world? Because we do have a global audience, and we are passionate about making sure that we’re telling stories that really cover the globe and cover the spectrum of people across the world.”

The Summer I Turned Pretty has grown into a widely popular series, with its third season gaining significant attention, particularly among young women who relate to its emotional storytelling. Adapted from Jenny Han’s book trilogy, the show explores the complexities of growing up—capturing both the challenges and the excitement that come with it.

“We had a big gap between Season 2 and Season 3, and we were a little nervous about whether we would end up seeing a dip in [viewership],” Sanders admitted. Instead, he says the response to the third and final season has been “quite the opposite.” He further indicates that these series have shown a huge increase in Prime Video subscribers, “There has been just a massive explosion of people coming into the service.”

The strong global response to shows with universal themes, often presented through underrepresented perspectives, reflects a broader strategy of creating content that appeals to diverse audiences. With the growing interest in The Summer I Turned Pretty, viewers in India and across age groups are now awaiting the season finale of the coming-of-age drama on September 17.

Janhvi Kapoor and Sidharth Malhotra respond to Param Sundari’s comparisons with Chennai Express: “It is definitely a compliment being compared to it”

When the first-look teaser of Param Sundari, starring Janhvi Kapoor and Sidharth Malhotra, hit the internet, viewers were quick to draw parallels to the 2013 Rohit Shetty blockbuster Chennai Express, featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone. Fans were calling it a Gen-Z version or a “lite” variant of Chennai Express, drawn in by the inter-regional romance and quirky characterizations.

Janhvi Kapoor and Sidharth Malhotra respond to Param Sundari’s comparisons with Chennai Express “It is definitely a compliment being compared to it”

Janhvi Kapoor, in an interview with Mirchi Plus, stated, “It’s a hit movie, and it is an iconic movie. But Deepika (Padukone) played a Tamilian in the film, which if you think about it is a generalisation happening from the people who are comparing the two films. I am from Kerala in the film, and not all people from the South can be grouped together. It’s a different milieu altogether, and it’s not like that this is a repetitive thing at all. 2 States was similar, but it came before Chennai Express, and these kinds of films aren’t being released every year. Anyways, people aren’t comparing us to something that needs to be forgotten. Chennai Express was an iconic film, with iconic characters and actors.”

Her co-star, Sidharth Malhotra, welcomed the comparison, explaining, “We don’t mind the comparison at all, I think it is a compliment. I love that film, and I am a fan of Rohit Shetty films. People remember certain things due to the nostalgia factor that is connected to them, even though I don’t think that the two films are the same. Shah Rukh sir didn’t exactly play a guy from Delhi, and they were definitely not in Kerala, and Janhvi is playing a half Malayalam half Tamilian in the film, but it is definitely a compliment being compared to it.”

Sidharth added that Param Sundari aims to revive the rom-com genre in the industry, referencing classics like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), and Hum Tum (2004).

Indeed, while netizens latch on to the nostalgic vibe, the stars emphasize that Param Sundari has its own distinct flavour rooted in a unique cultural context and character backgrounds. The cross-cultural rom-com explores the dynamics between a Delhi-based protagonist and a Malayali-Tamilian character from Kerala, setting it apart from Chennai Express both in tone and intent.

Param Sundari, directed by Tushar Jalota and produced by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films, stars Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor in the lead roles and is scheduled to release on August 29, 2025.

YRF Spyverse at an Inflection point: Long gaps, aging stars and repetitive plots worry trade experts; reboot urged to avoid becoming dated

The YRF Spy Universe was envisioned as Bollywood’s answer to Hollywood’s Marvel and DC franchises-  a shared world of larger-than-life heroes, crossover spectacles, and box office dominance. Beginning with Ek Tha Tiger over a decade ago, it has delivered massive blockbusters like Tiger Zinda Hai and Pathaan. For a franchise built on scale, spectacle, and superstar muscle, the YRF Spyverse suddenly finds itself at a crossroads. War 2, touted as the next big tentpole after Pathaan and Tiger 3, was expected to push the universe into a new orbit. Instead, its stumbling box office performance has sparked uncomfortable questions: has the spy template gone stale, has the long-gap release strategy diluted momentum, and is the franchise struggling to stay in step with a new generation of audiences raised on global OTT content? Trade voices are nearly unanimous – what once felt like an unstoppable juggernaut now needs a hard reset, from tighter scripts to fresher faces.

Film trade analyst Atul Mohan believes audiences have started to see through the sameness of the stories, “I think it is getting repetitive – somebody will need to be saved or there will be an enemy, or they will fight amongst themselves, etc. The people have also started feeling the same with the Spy Universe films.”

That sentiment reflects a growing concern that while scale and star power remain intact, the narratives no longer surprise.

Exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi places the Spyverse’s situation in a global context, “Any universe or franchise now and then needs that reboot. Look at what’s happening with Marvel; they are going through a reboot. What happened with DC for its revival was a kind of a reboot. If you look back, this whole Spyverse retrospectively speaking started with Ek Tha Tiger, which was over a decade ago. Technically, it’s had quite a run. The people who grew on Ek Tha Tiger are a slightly older than the people who frequent cinemas today.”

Rathi also points out that irregular scheduling has weakened the brand, “You can’t have a gap of multiple years between two films of the same universe. To develop and nurture a universe, you need to have at least one or two films coming out every year, like Marvel and DC does. Here the gaps between the Spyverse films have been so long – in some cases, 2, 3 or 4 years. Then it becomes tough to nurture the fan following for that universe.”

Looking forward, he stresses the need for fresh blood, “For a universe, you need reigning superstars but also upcoming stars. Both Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan are humongous superstars. But for a universe to have its legs, there needs to be a vision for the next 10 years. Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan 10 years from now are going to be 70-year-old gentlemen. So, it’s necessary to include fresher and younger talent; stars who are on their rise rather than those who are at their peak.”

Girish Johar, Zee Studios, agrees that the creative template must evolve, “I do believe that. Something new has to be presented to the audiences. We need to understand that our target audience is the youth, who are catching up global content on OTT platforms and cinemas and watching complex and far-sighted storytelling, especially spy and undercover movies. This is the same target audience that a metro city has for a film like War 2. So you probably need to give them more, which they don’t find in other content. The storytelling, narrative and ideas have to be reworked, so that the new young age audience finds some resonance with them and they don’t find it dated.”

From the exhibitor’s side, Satadeep Saha, CEO of SSR Cinemas Pvt Ltd echoes the demand for tighter writing, “Definitely. It definitely needs a better screenplay. I feel a tighter screenplay would have been better. I am sure from next time onwards, they (makers) will keep this in their minds and then they will plan accordingly.”

Vishek Chauhan, owner of Roopbani Cinema in Bihar, makes a cultural distinction that cuts to the heart of the issue, “War franchise is not desi cinema. This is like a playbook from Hollywood studios. This is how a Hollywood film is made. A desi film is made very differently. There are emotions. There is a different kind of filmmaking; the sensibilities are different. Indian cinema is multi-genre filmmaking.”

He also underlines why replicating Marvel’s model is difficult, “Marvel has around 2000 books and comics for story arcs and characters. But you don’t have this for the Spy Universe. You are creating things out of thin air. There is no relatability. For example, you made NTR Jr. enter the film. Then you are explaining how and from where did he come from. But in Marvel universe, people already know who is who.”

The trade consensus is clear: the Spyverse cannot survive on repetition, sporadic releases, or aging stars alone. To remain relevant, it must recalibrate its storytelling, sharpen its screenplays, and inject fresh talent. Otherwise, the fatigue evident in War 2 could deepen into franchise burnout.

Bollywood actor and filmmaker Rakesh Roshan, known for iconic hits like Koi… Mil Gaya and Krrish, recently gave fans a glimpse into his spectacular Khandala mansion during Farah Khan’s YouTube vlog. Nestled atop the hills and sprawled across 22,400 square feet, the property sits on five acres of lush greenery, offering panoramic views of the Rajmachi Hills. Reflecting on the home, Roshan said, “I was born in a garage, so I always dreamed of building a big house.”

Designed by architect Grigoria Oikonomou of Sibha Grigoria Private Limited, the all-white mansion resembles a private resort more than a traditional residence. Aerial drone shots reveal landscaped gardens, dramatic hilltop positioning, and wide balconies that seamlessly merge indoor and outdoor spaces. Farah Khan herself joked, “It feels like both a private resort and a stadium.”

The estate’s centrepiece is a massive swimming pool, large enough for a joke about hosting an Olympic race. Surrounding the pool, quirky seating areas—tree-trunk chairs and boat loungers—bring a touch of nature to the property. Luxury car enthusiasts will appreciate the expansive garage, perfect for housing the family’s collection.

Inside, the mansion continues to impress. Multiple living rooms, a TV lounge, and an open dining area host guests amid chandeliers, Indian artwork, and floor-to-ceiling glass walls framing the lush hillside views. Every space exudes character, and wide balconies extend living areas outdoors, blending comfort with nature.

Attention to detail is evident throughout, from the grand staircase sparkling with ceiling lights to artefacts and paintings sourced from across India. For recreation, the house boasts a home theatre with recliners, a gym, sauna, steam and massage rooms, and even a basketball court.

The bedrooms, each with floor-to-ceiling windows and unique decor themes, impressed Farah Khan, but it was the luxurious bathrooms that stole the show. Walking into one, she quipped, “This could actually be someone’s bedroom; bedrooms in Bombay are smaller than this.” Rakesh explained that each bathroom was uniquely designed to avoid repetition.

Valued at around Rs. 120 crores, the Khandala mansion isn’t just a home—it’s Rakesh Roshan’s dream estate, combining space, style, and ultimate comfort in a hillside paradise.
