Filmmaker Karan Johar recently shared an emotional note for veteran director David Dhawan after attending a special event celebrating the filmmaker’s cinematic legacy. The event, hosted by PVR following the trailer launch of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, also marked the announcement of what is being described as David Dhawan’s final directorial venture.

Known for shaping the commercial comedy space in Hindi cinema during the 1990s and 2000s, David Dhawan has directed several successful entertainers over the decades. Reacting to the filmmaker’s statement about stepping away from direction, Karan Johar shared a heartfelt Instagram Story reflecting on David’s impact on the industry.
“Yesterday when I went to Davidjis celebration and he told me this was going to be his last film… I had a bittersweet reaction in my heart… here’s a filmmaker who is responsible for creating and entire Genre of films… A DAVID DHAWAN film spells entertainment! What must he feel saying this when he is an institution that so many filmmaker’s have taken forward as inspiration,” Karan wrote. The filmmaker further added, “He is LOVED and RESPECTED and CELEBRATED by our fraternity…. Theres NO opposing that!!! Here’s to your summer blockbuster with your son. DAVID DHAWAN… NO 1 man always.”

Karan Johar and David Dhawan have shared a long-standing professional and personal association over the years. The filmmaker also played a significant role in launching Varun Dhawan, David Dhawan’s son, in Bollywood with Student of the Year in 2012. Since then, Karan has collaborated with Varun on several projects including the Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Kalank, Jugjugg Jeeyo, and Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari.
Meanwhile, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai reunites David Dhawan and Varun Dhawan once again for a full-fledged comedy entertainer. The film stars Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde opposite Varun for the first time. The ensemble cast also includes Mouni Roy, Jimmy Shergill, Maniesh Paul, and Chunky Panday in key roles. The film is slated to release in cinemas on June 5 and is expected to bring back David Dhawan’s trademark blend of comedy, romance, confusion, and family entertainment to the big screen.
