Actor and former Miss India Celina Jaitly has spoken about the challenges she says she faced during her 15-year marriage with Austrian hotelier Peter Haag, revealing details of the alleged abuse that eventually led her to file a domestic violence complaint in a Mumbai court.
In a recent statement reflecting on her experience, the actor said that the marriage had been marked by emotional and physical distress for several years. According to her legal team, she endured “physical abuse” and repeated threats during the relationship. One of the alleged remarks attributed to Haag included a threat that he would “disfigure your face,” which her lawyer cited as an example of the intimidation she faced. Jaitly and Haag married in 2011 and have three surviving sons together. The actor filed her complaint under India’s Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, a law designed to protect women from various forms of abuse within domestic relationships, including emotional, verbal and financial harm in addition to physical violence.
In her petition, Jaitly alleged that the abuse in the marriage included emotional manipulation, verbal humiliation and attempts to control her career and finances. Court documents cited in media reports also state that she sought compensation for the alleged loss of income and professional opportunities during the period she says she was prevented from continuing her acting career. The actor has reportedly asked the court for financial compensation as well as monthly maintenance while the case proceeds. She has also sought custody-related relief concerning her children.
Jaitly, who appeared in films such as No Entry, Apna Sapna Money Money and Golmaal Returns, has largely stayed away from acting in recent years while living abroad with her family. Her legal case has brought renewed public attention to the personal struggles she says she endured during the marriage.
