EXCLUSIVE: Bhumi Pednekar on why Mumbai owns crime stories: “The city shapes who you become”

Few cities in Indian cinema have been as persistently examined as Mumbai, especially through the lens of crime. In her exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Bhumi Pednekar explained why that fascination refuses to fade.

“Mumbai Police is the best,” she said instantly, without hesitation. “I’m a Mumbaikar. I love them.” That emotional connection informs Daldal’s portrayal of the city not as spectacle, but as lived-in reality. Mumbai in the series isn’t glamorous or stylised; it’s crowded, exhausting, morally complex.

Producer Vikram Malhotra believes Mumbai naturally lends itself to such narratives. “Crime stories work best when the setting has layers. Mumbai has too many truths existing at once.”

Director Suresh Triveni added that the city amplifies internal conflict. “Everyone likes to see what they can’t do in real life. Mumbai becomes that escape and that confrontation.”

In Daldal, the police force is neither idealised nor demonised. Bhumi’s character exists within the system but is fractured by it. “The only honest thing in her life is her job. Everywhere else, she’s broken.”

Mumbai, much like her, becomes a character quietly shaping choices, suppressing emotions, and forcing moral compromises.

The city’s enduring pull lies in this duality. It offers hope and corrosion in equal measure. Daldal taps into that contradiction, proving once again that Mumbai doesn’t just host crime stories it defines them.
