Ahead of the release of Border 2, Varun was heavily trolled on social media, especially over visuals from the song ‘Ghar Kab Aaoge’. Memes and comments questioned whether he was the right choice for a film associated with the legacy of Border. However, once the film hit theatres, audience response began telling a different story. With Border 2 now entering the Rs. 200 crores club, the actor’s performance has largely put those doubts to rest.

In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, director Anurag Singh shared that his decision to cast Varun was based on the actor’s serious work rather than his more familiar commercial image. Singh recalled watching Badlapur soon after Student of the Year and being surprised by the shift in Varun’s screen presence. “I remember thinking, ‘Man, what a switch this guy is pulling,’” he said. “So in my mind it was clear that if Varun is coming into the film, then I’m going to that Varun. I’m not going to the other Varun.”
Talking about the trolling Varun faced before the release, Singh said the reaction has now flipped. “Now people are apologizing and saying, ‘Brother, just tell us where to submit the apology application,’” he said, adding that there could be no bigger win for the team. “There can’t be a bigger victory than this.”
