Farhan Akhtar confesses Jee Le Zaraa delays shook his confidence as a director: “There are some personal insecurities”

Farhan Akhtar, who is currently promoting his latest release 120 Bahadur, has spoken candidly about the period of uncertainty he experienced while waiting to direct Jee Le Zaraa. Appearing on Unfiltered by Samdish, the actor-filmmaker reflected on how the repeated postponements of the film left him stressed, insecure, and questioning his own abilities as a director.

The film, announced in 2021 with Priyanka Chopra, Alia Bhatt and Katrina Kaif in the lead, was supposed to mark Farhan’s return to direction after more than a decade. However, as the project kept getting pushed, he found himself holding on to a schedule that never materialised.

Farhan recalled, “So my film Toofan was released in 2021, and right after that, I was set to direct a film called Jee Le Zaraa. It just kept getting delayed, and for those two years, I kept saying no to all other opportunities that came my way. I did that because when you have to direct you can only focus on that. If an acting role came, I told them, ‘No, I am soon going to be directing.’”

He added that despite his commitment, the shoot date continued to move. “The date for the film’s shooting just kept shifting ahead. It was such a stressful period because I thought that I was wasting time, and before I knew it, two and a half years had gone by.”

The prolonged uncertainty began affecting his mental well-being, leading him to seek therapy. Farhan shared, “There are some personal insecurities as well. I started feeling that maybe people thought that I wouldn’t be able to direct. It had been 12 years since I had directed a film, and maybe people were doubtful of my skill. When you sit with a therapist and you tell these things, you start realising where all these things are coming from. I didn’t want to say, ‘Let me move on from this film.’”

Since its announcement, multiple reasons have been cited for the delay, including the busy schedules of the leading cast. In 2023, co-writer Reema Kagti had mentioned that the film would go on floors by the end of the year, but the plan did not come through.

With Jee Le Zaraa still on hold, Farhan is now preparing to direct Don 3, starring Ranveer Singh.
