Even 25 years after its release, Manoj Bajpayee looks back at Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar (2000) with pride and affection — despite its box-office failure. “In spite of its failure, I’m very proud of Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar, which completes 25 years on October 6,” says the National Award-winning actor.
“Hansal Mehta and I were trying to do something different — and so what if we failed? Failure is a far stronger incentive to evolve than success. Imagine how boring life would be if we had only success to fall back on. Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar is what I’d call an honourable failure. We failed, yes — but we learnt from our mistakes.”
Recalling his early days with director Hansal Mehta, Manoj adds, “We were young, we were full of energy, and we made mistakes. But we had the courage to take the blow — to stumble and fall.”
When asked what went wrong with the film, he reflects, “Nothing! Nothing went wrong. We were trying to make a particular kind of film, but it turned out differently. Hansal and I had more than our share of disagreements during the shooting. Today, both of us have evolved, grown as human beings. We’re better equipped — intellectually, emotionally, and cinematically — to make Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar more honestly. So, my appeal to Hansal let’s make Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar again. This time, let’s do it the way we had originally planned.”
But would Tabu, his co-star in the original film, agree to revisit the story? Manoj is unsure. “Pataa nahin, yaar. Over the years, she’s remained a dear friend. But Tabu likes to be left alone. She’s happy in her own space. I don’t know if she’ll share Hansal’s and my enthusiasm for Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar.”
