Sanya Malhotra celebrates triple joy as Kathal, Jawan, and Sam Bahadur sweep National Film Awards: “It feels like the country acknowledging your work”

In a stunning and rare triumph, Bollywood actor Sanya Malhotra is over the moon as three of her films—Kathal, Jawan, and Sam Bahadur—have been honoured at the 71st National Film Awards.

Reflecting on this milestone, she told Hindustan Times, “You know when I found out that all three were being honored with National Awards, I had to take a moment. It’s rare, and I don’t take it for granted at all. It really makes me reflect on how important it is to trust your gut. As an actor, you don’t always know how a project will be received. 50 Years of Sholay: Javed Akhtar reflects on the film’s inexplicable success; says, “Charisma can never be defined”

As Sholay marks its 50th anniversary, co-writer Javed Akhtar revisitsed the film’s extraordinary legacy and defied attempts to pin down its enduring charm. Released on August 15, 1975—India’s Independence Day—Sholay initially struggled at the box office, but soon exploded into cultural phenomenon, today regarded as arguably the greatest Hindi film ever made.

Before Ramesh Sippy came on board as director, Sholay was conceived by the celebrated screenwriting duo Salim-Javed. Riding high on the success of Zanjeer, they pitched the idea to Sippy. Now, as the iconic film marks 50 years since its release, Javed Akhtar — one-half of the legendary writing team — reflects on its inception, enduring legacy, and the mystery behind its phenomenal success.

Asked to explain the film’s monumental success, Akhtar responded wryly, “Agar mujhe maloom hota toh main doosri Sholay nahin likh leta”. He elaborated, “Charisma can never be defined, whether in a person or in a piece of art, whether it’s a film or a song. If you are able to solve and decode what it is, then it is no longer charisma. We try to rationalise and analyse everything, and find logic in things. But sometimes, there is none. You can analyse it and find reasons and rules for something working, but the same rules can apply to other things that did not work. Charisma is an unknown factor that is very difficult to understand.”

Javed also reflected on the personal impact of Sholay and said, “Two films of ours released that year – Deewar and Sholay. Naturally, our lives changed. We were able to earn money, make a name for ourselves, and build a standing in the industry. 1975 was a very important year in our lives.” The triumph of these projects elevated Salim-Javed to the most sought-after screenwriting duo in Bollywood.

While others may dissect Sholay’s success endlessly, Javed Akhtar chooses not to. “Reminiscing about old things too much is a waste,” he said matter-of-factly. Drawing an analogy, he added, “Your work is like your children — their achievements aren’t always solely because of you. A film becomes immortal not just because of its creators, but because thousands, even millions, embrace it. They liked it, they connected with it, and that’s what made it so big. On paper or on camera, it wasn’t this grand. It’s when millions identify with it that a work of art truly becomes monumental.”

Sholay featured an ensemble cast including Sanjeev Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Amjad Khan, Hema Malini, and Jaya Bachchan in pivotal roles. Blending themes of revenge and romance, it has endured as one of the most quoted, celebrated, and rewatched films in Indian cinema history.

Saiyaara Box Office: Ahaan Panday–Aneet Padda starrer collects Rs. 20.25 cr on third weekend; emerges as second-highest third weekend grosser of 2025

After weeks of impressive box office momentum, Saiyaara shows no signs of slowing down. The Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda starrer has scored a robust Rs. 20.25 crore in its third weekend, firmly cementing its place as a commercial success. This performance has propelled Saiyaara to the No. 2 spot among the highest third weekend grossers of 2025, just behind the historical juggernaut Chhaava.

The third weekend haul, broken down across the three days, saw the film collect Rs. 5 crore on Friday, a solid Rs. 7 crore on Saturday, and an even stronger Rs. 8.25 crore on Sunday. These numbers not only signal strong word-of-mouth but also underline the film’s wide appeal across demographics. What’s more impressive is that Saiyaara is holding its own against releases with bigger star casts and higher production budgets.

Leading the 2025 third weekend chart is Chhaava, the period epic which amassed a staggering Rs. 60.10 crore in its third weekend. While Saiyaara trails behind by a considerable margin, it has convincingly outperformed other major releases of the year. Raid 2, despite its franchise pull, could only bring in Rs. 13.45 crore, while Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par followed closely at Rs. 12.31 crore. Comedy franchise Housefull 5 stood at a distant fifth with Rs. 7 crore.

Further down the list are Kesari Chapter 2 (Rs. 6.10 crore), Metro… In Dino (Rs. 5 crore), Jaat (Rs. 4.79 crore), Sky Force (Rs. 4.05 crore) and Bhool Chuk Maaf (Rs. 2.80 crore), none of which have been able to match Saiyaara’s consistency in drawing weekend footfalls.

The success of Saiyaara is particularly significant for lead actor Ahaan Panday, who has transitioned from debutant buzz to breakout star with this film. Likewise, Aneet Padda has won over audiences with her nuanced performance, and the film’s layered love story, rooted in emotion and realism, seems to be striking the right chord.

With solid hold at the box office and increasing popularity among youth and families alike, Saiyaara is fast becoming a defining hit of the year. As it enters its fourth week, the real test will be how well it continues to sustain amidst new releases. But for now, Saiyaara has done what very few love stories in recent years have managed — turn a relatively modest opening into a long-lasting box office winner.

Ankita Lokhande appeals for help as house help’s daughter goes missing; seeks Mumbai Police’s urgent intervention

The actress revealed that Saloni, the daughter of her house help Kanta, and her friend Neha have been missing since 10 am on July 31, last seen in the Vakola area of Mumbai.

The emotional post, shared via Ankita’s official Instagram handle, quickly gathered traction as concerned fans and fellow citizens began amplifying the message across platforms. Expressing the gravity of the situation, Ankita wrote, “Our house help Kanta’s daughter and her daughter’s friend, Saloni and Neha, have been missing since July 31, 10 am. They were last seen near the Vakola area. An FIR has already been filed at Malvani Police Station, but their whereabouts are still unknown. They are not just part of our home – they’re family.”

The actress went on to tag Mumbai Police and include the hashtag #Mumbaikars, urging locals and authorities alike to help locate the girls. She continued, “We are deeply worried and request everyone, especially @mumbaipolice and #Mumbaikars, to help us spread the word and assist in any way possible to bring them back safely. SHOCKING Throwback amid Animal snub: Ranbir Kapoor wasn’t in the National Award race for Rockstar as the makers DID NOT submit the film

History was created on August 1, 2025, as Shah Rukh Khan finally won his first ever National Award, for Jawan. While there were celebrations among his fans and a big section of the netizens, some felt that Ranbir Kapoor deserved to win for his performance in the blockbuster, Animal (2023).

Ranbir Kapoor is a rare superstar who has floored one and all with his acting abilities, right from his first film, Saawariya (2007). Rockstar (2011) is a landmark performance in his career and it was a performance that many felt should have been honored with a National Award. The reason, however, why the film didn’t win in this prestigious award ceremony will shock you.

In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama in May 2013, Imtiaz Ali had revealed, “Ranbir Kapoor didn’t get the National Award for Rockstar because we didn’t apply for it. Aisi bewakoofi ki thi humne. That’s why even the music didn’t fetch an award. The producer was supposed to (apply), but we were doing something else (at that point).” This is also the reason why Rockstar didn’t win in other deserving categories like Best Film, Best Director, Best Lyrics and also the technical awards.

Coming back to Animal, it featured Ranbir as Ranvijay Singh, a man who goes to insane lengths when an attempt is made to murder his father. There’s an equal amount of love and hate for the film due to its themes and certain sequences. But when it comes to Ranbir’s performance, even the biggest critics of the film have agreed that the actor has outdone himself in the film. As a result, fans of the actor and of the film have been upset that he was snubbed by the National Awards jury.

Taking Shah Rukh Khan’s journey as an example, it’s safe to say that a National Award is inevitable for Ranbir Kapoor. It may happen for a fully-deserved performance, or maybe the National Award-winning act might not match up to that of Animal, as it also happened with SRK; fans believe Swades and Chak De India were far more award-worthy. But ultimately, what will truly matter is that Ranbir earns his place as a National Award-winning superstar. Given the trajectory of his career and the depth he brings to his roles, it’s only a matter of time before that honour comes his way.

Saiyaara Box Office: Has an excellent second week as it hits a century, though is facing major competition now

It was an excellent second week for Saiyaara as it ended up hitting a century. When films need to be really special to go past the Rs. 100 crores mark in their entire lifetime, here comes a newcomer romantic drama which has not just opened exceedingly well but also sustained pace for second week in succession to come so close to the Rs. 300 crores mark in just 14 days.

As a matter of fact, it could well have done that by the close of second week itself. However out of nowhere came Mahavatar Narsimha and that ended up collecting almost Rs. 30 crores in just the Hindi version. Now that definitely impacted the run of Saiyaara and it would be safe to assume that at least Rs. 12-15 crores could well have been lost there. This was seen from the fact that barring Tuesday (when there were reduced ticket rates and hence heavier footfalls), none of the weekdays could go past the Rs. 10 crores mark. Also, there were steady drops also seen (though in absolute terms the collections were still quite good).

The Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda film currently stands at Rs. 285.25 crores and it will enter the Rs. 300 Crore Club tomorrow. While it seemed all but confirmed that it would enter the Rs. 400 Crore Club at ease, now that won’t be possible and the best case scenario for the Mohit Suri film would be to find itself in Rs. 360-375 crores range. That would still ensure that it keeps its All Time Blockbuster tag.

Box Office: Mahavatar Narsimha continues to rise, Saiyaara stays good

Mahavatar Narsimha is a HIT. The film is continuing to rise at the box office at a rapid pace and this was evident on “Blockbuster Tuesday” as well. With reduced ticket prices coming into action, the film ended up collecting Rs. 5 crores more at the box office. On Monday, the animation film had brought in Rs. 3.50 crores, so this is yet another very good jump in numbers.

What’s remarkable is that the film has very restricted count of shows on which it’s playing and still the numbers that are coming in are quite good, which reflects high occupancy. In fact, yesterday, majority of evening shows were going full at most of the centres and that pushed the collections way past the Rs. 4 crores mark. In fact, even today and tomorrow the film will end up collecting over Rs. 3 crores each which means from Rs. 20.05 crores total that it currently stands on, it will push itself to a week of Rs. 26 crores, which is phenomenal.

As for Saiyaara, it also saw a rise in numbers from Rs. 9.50 crores Monday, as it stepped into the double digit zone again by bringing in Rs. 10.50 crores. Of course, it could well have been collecting a lot better if not for Mahavatar Narsimha arriving out of nowhere, something which it is impacting it by at least Rs. 2 crores on a daily basis. Currently standing at Rs. 270.75 crores, it will now have to wait till Saturday to enter the Rs. 300 Crore Club. Also, the best case scenario now for the film is an entry into the Rs. 400 Crore Club.

Saiyaara Box Office: Film scores well on Monday, Mahavatar Narsimha poses a challenge, exhibitors rejoice

Saiyaara is continuing its victory run well into the weekdays of the second week as well, as Monday too saw good collections. The trending so far had indicated that a score in the vicinity of Rs. 10 crores was always on the cards. After all, Saturday had got into late 20s and then Sunday had yet another hit 30.

However there has been a spanner in the plans for the film. What seemed like a cakewalk to keep running on and on for weeks at succession has seen a hurdle in the form of Mahavatar Narsimha. The animation film has been doing quite well ever since release and has been seeing an unbelievable trending already. Though it was playing at select screens and shows on Friday and Saturday, it has now seen a huge rise in collections since Sunday with the showcasing further increasing on Monday.

As a result, as good as Rs. 3.60 crores came on Monday and that has hit Saiyaara by a couple of crores at least. While the love story could have comfortably collected Rs. 12-13 crores on Monday going by the trending in the last 10 days, it managed to bring in Rs. 9.50 crores with the overall total teaching Rs. 260.25 crores. While it’s still the highest collecting film by a distance, Mahavatar Narsimha is fast catching up as well and its 4 day score reads Rs. 14.70 crores.

This is turning out to be the best time for Bollywood in the entire 2025 and with Son Of Sardaar 2 and Dhadak 2 next followed by War 2 (incidentally, all sequels/franchises), there is very good reason for exhibitors to rejoice.

Saiyaara Box Office: Ahaan Panday and Aneet padda starrer has a SOLID second Friday

Brace up for more records to be broken by Saiyaara in days to come. The manner in which the second week has kickstarted, rest assured more than Rs. 100 crores will quite comfortably come in. That’s because on Friday, the film brought in Rs. 18.50 crores, which is truly terrific because the day before it had netted Rs. 19.50 crores, which means there is hardly any drop.

As a matter of fact, it has hardly dipped when compared to the first Friday either which already had blockbuster collections of Rs. 22 crores. To have such a minor dip is a testimony to the fact that audiences have lapped up the film in an unimaginable way. What has to be seen is how do collections turn out to be today and tomorrow, since last Saturday (Rs. 26.25 crores) and Sunday (Rs. 36.25 crores) were as it is humongous. While today the collections should zoom into Rs. 27-28 crores range, it would be interesting to see if tomorrow the numbers go a crore or two ahead of last Sunday.

The Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda film is already a blockbuster of epic proportions as Rs. 193.75 crores have already come in. In fact, as you read this, the film has already entered the Rs. 200 Crore Club and by the close of the second weekend, Rs. 250 crores mark would be very comfortably crossed. Next up is the Rs. 300 Crore Club milestone and one can already imagine Mohit Suri and Aditya Chopra getting ready to pop the champagne.

Tusshar Kapoor joins Masti 4 cast: “It’s something you’ve never seen me do before”

Actor Tusshar Kapoor is all set to bring his signature comic timing to the much-loved Masti franchise as he officially joins the cast of Masti 4. Known for his work in several comedy blockbusters, Tusshar’s entry promises to inject new energy into the fourth instalment of the hit adult-comedy series.

The film, directed by Milap Zaveri in his debut outing for the Masti franchise, marks a fresh chapter with a brand-new storyline and character dynamics. Kapoor, who has earlier collaborated with Zaveri and co-stars like Riteish Deshmukh and Aftab Shivdasani in films like Kyaa Kool Hai Hum, brings in years of experience in the comedy genre.

“I’ve worked with all the 3 actors separately before and with Riteish and Aftab in a similar zone for Kyaa Kool Hai Hum! Therefore, there was no reason to be concerned about the chemistry between us and, most importantly, they welcomed me with open arms when I reached the outdoor venue where the film was being shot! We were all excited and in sync with each other from the very 1st day! I’m sure the camaraderie and fun off‑screen will reflect on‑screen, too!”

Addressing the film’s genre and appeal, he added, “Masti 4 is an adult but family comedy and has been written keeping the sensibilities of the wider audience in mind. My job as an actor is to do my job with sincerity and I’ve stuck to doing that with conviction! Regarding the boldness of it, my director is more concerned than me about the limits of the Masti universe and he’d be best able to explain further!”

After scoring a record opening weekend for a love story, Saiyaara continued its victory march on Monday as well, what with the collections turning out to be simply fantabulous. By means of comparison, biggest love story grosser since the inception of Rs. 100 Crore Club, Kabir Singh, had opened at Rs. 20.21 crores, enjoyed a weekend of Rs. 70.83 crores and then continued its momentum into Monday with Rs. 17.54 crores being collected. Now Saiyaara has started at Rs. 22 crores, scored a weekend of Rs. 84 crores and Monday has gone up to Rs. 24.25 crores. In all ways, this Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda film is doing much better, which means Kabir Singh lifetime of Rs. 278.24 crores would be comfortably surpassed.

In its journey to achieve the Rs. 300 Crore Club milestone and beyond, this YRF offering has now already entered the Rs. 100 Crore Club as its four day collections stand at Rs. 108.75 crores. Today, the film will see a further increase in numbers as Blockbuster Tuesday offer is on, which means footfalls are going to be very heavy. Despite reduced ticket rates, huge occupancy would mean better numbers which means Rs. 130 crores mark would be comfortably crossed in a matter of just 5 days.

Abhimanyu Dassani to lead film based on Galwan martyr Sepoy Gurtej Singh’s life

The 2020 Galwan Valley clash between Indian and Chinese troops, one of the deadliest military confrontations in decades, continues to inspire cinematic retellings. Following projects like Battle of Galwan, starring Salman Khan and directed by Apoorva Lakhia, and Rahul Roy’s LAC: Battle of Galwan, now streaming on YouTube, another film is in the works, this time focusing on the life of Vir Chakra awardee Sepoy Gurtej Singh.

As per a report by Mid-Day, titled The Lion of Galwan (working title), the film will be produced by businessman Himalay Dassani, husband of actor Bhagyashree. Their son, actor Abhimanyu Dassani, known for Meenakshi Sundareshwar (2021), is set to portray the late soldier in what promises to be an emotionally charged performance.

Speaking about the motivation behind the project, Himalay said, “It’s the life story of Sepoy Gurtej Singh. I was intrigued, so I traced his family down to his village in Mansa, Punjab, and acquired the biopic rights from his parents.”

The narrative will span three key phases of Singh’s life — his early years, the events of the night of June 15, 2020, when 20 Indian soldiers, including Singh and Colonel Bikkumalla Santosh Babu, were martyred in a hand-to-hand clash near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, and the larger strategic stance taken by the Indian government in response to the Chinese aggression.

According to Himalay, research is currently underway with two teams stationed in Chandigarh and Delhi. “We are working closely with various ministries, the Indian Army, and government bodies to ensure accuracy. The film will also depict how the defence and foreign ministries responded that night, and how our soldiers fought bare-handed in freezing temperatures.”

The makers plan to begin filming in Ladakh in early 2026, as the extreme winter conditions make shooting unfeasible before that. Himalay adds that he is currently in discussion with three potential directors, and a final choice will be made soon.

When asked about the parallel Salman Khan project on the same subject, Himalay welcomed it, saying, “It’s like the Indo-Pak wars — each battle has multiple stories and perspectives. Salman playing Colonel Santosh Babu is a great thing. There’s room for more than one film when the stories are this important.”
