PVR-Inox issues statement after they boycott screening of Malayalam films in their multiplex chains

PVR-Inox multiplex chains have boycotted Malayalam films after the producers and distributors opted for PDC, a content mastering unit which is helpful in screening movies at a reasonable cost compared to the likes of other content providers like Qube and TSR. Owing to the same, many Malayalam films which were slated to release this week including the Fahadh Faasil starrer Aavesham, Pranav Mohanlal starrer Varshangalkku Shesham, and Unni Mukundan’s Jai Ganesh has been boycotted by the multiplex chains across the country. Further, films like Prithviraj Sukumaran starrer Aadujeevitham and the famous Manjummel Boys have also been removed from these theatres.

In a statement released by PVR-Inox on social media, they have written, “Such an action of forcing an exhibitor to procure content from only one source is anti- competitive in nature and prohibited under the law. As a law-abiding member of Indian Film Industry, we are unable to comply with this advice.” They went on to add, “Just as the parents love their children equally, for us as a national cinema chain, every cinema is important and it’s incumbent on us that equal opportunity to showcase new movies is provided to all our newly opened cinemas. We have always been a reliable partner to all Malayalam Film Industry Studios, Producers, Artists, and other creators. We will be delighted to have all Malayalam Films play at PVR FORUM Kochi and our other cinemas in Kerala as well as Pan-India. We would like to appeal to all the Producers and Film makers to constructively engage with us and help us make Malayalam Film Industry bigger and better.”

On the other hand, the Kerala Film Producers Association (KFPA) have expressed their disappointment and have also addressed the issue by demanding a compensation of the loss they have been facing as producers as their films have been boycotted or removed from theatres. As per reports, no official statement has been issued by the KFPA in response to the letter released by the PVR-Inox officials.
