In this weekend’s episode of Indian Idol Season 15, the show will celebrate the one-year anniversary of Animal with its director, Sandeep Reddy Vanga, joining the special segment. During the episode, Vanga will address Javed Akhtar’s criticism of the film, taking a dig at the veteran lyricist.
The debate on Indian Idol Season 15 kicked off when contestant Myscmme Bosu praised Animal and shared that she had watched it three times. This sparked a disagreement with fellow contestant Manasi, who took issue with certain scenes in the film. Myscmee expressed frustration, saying, “I’ve tried to convince her about how Animal makes sense, but she’s not convinced. I want Sandeep sir to explain it to her.”
During the Indian Idol Season 15 episode, the discussion took an intense turn when Manasi expressed her concerns about a controversial scene. She said, “There’s this scene with ‘mera joota chaato,’ and I personally have a problem with it.”
Sandeep was visibly taken a back when he said, “You have a problem with the joota chato scene, but no problem with the hero killing 300 people?” To this, Manasi responded by saying, “Yes, there is a problem.”
The conversation on Indian Idol took a heated turn when Manasi brought up Javed Akhtar’s criticism of Animal. “Javed Akhtar said it’s dangerous for society, and I agree with him,” she stated. Sandeep responded, “If Javed ji wasn’t a lyricist or story writer, I’d take his words seriously.”
Earlier in the year, Javed Akhtar had spoken about his criticism of Animal in an interview with Barkha Dutt and said, “I didn’t express my opinion on Animal, I spoke about the audience that watched it. If 15 people have made a film with the wrong values, if 10-12 people make obscene songs, that’s not the problem. If 15 people are perverts among the 140 crore population, it doesn’t matter. When that thing goes on the market and becomes a superhit, that’s the problem.”
Animal, released in December 2023, explores the dynamics between a man, Ranvijay (played by Ranbir Kapoor), and his emotionally distant father (played by Anil Kapoor). As an anti-hero, Vijay goes to extreme lengths to protect his father, even resorting to mass violence, including gunning down around 200 people with a machine gun. Despite his brutal actions, he remains unacknowledged by his father, reflecting the film’s central theme of emotional dysfunction and familial expectations.
While Animal was a box office success, grossing over Rs 900 crores, it also sparked significant controversy. Critics and audiences alike labelled the film as toxic and misogynistic, citing its problematic portrayal of violence and relationships. Despite the criticism, the film’s commercial success indicates a strong connection with its audience, even amidst the debate surrounding its content.
